So with the current debate on what SSD size makes sense - how much space do your OS and programs take up?
Post in the thread the amount of space taken up by games on top of OS/progs please.

Could a moderator turn this into a proper poll as well please? Question: "How much space do your OS and programs take up, excluding games?" Answers: <40GB, 40GB≤60GB, 60GB≤80GB, ≥80GB.

Cheers

I'll get the ball rolling - C:\ - 80GB total, 40GB OS/Progs, 15GB games.

I think 80GB is the minimum really, can get away with 64GB if you shift things around, but then you can't install an awful lot at the same time. I went with 160gb X25-M G2 so I don't have to think about it. The cost per GB is a bit lower on this too. The price is also closer to the US value unlike the discrepancies with the 80GB and other SSDs.

For a laptop I'd always go for the biggest SSD you can afford.

out of interest... do the following assuming your on vista/windows 7

open CMD in admin mode, (right click run as administrator)

type "vssadmin list shadow storage"

or the following.

right click computer. go to properties and system protection and click configure. this will also show you how much your using and allow you to disable it.

lets see how much space your "wasting" on restore files.
also removing the page file from the hard drive will remove more files. assuming you have 4gb of ram or more.

my restore files are turned off along with my page file saving me some space.

I'd always go for the biggest SSD someone else could afford too, sounds like they're buying ;)
:D Fine, I'd always go for the biggest SSD *I* can afford, when it comes to laptops. I set the baseline for PCs as 64gb but I think 128 is a decent amount to have and ensures that as you build up a profile of programs and games, you don't have to start moving much to platter drives.

ive got 60gb it has windows on it and games some program files but most get put on ym 0+1 1tb array.

so its about 40-50gb in use. cant check right now as my rig is down :(

60GB Total which includes:
Windows Vista & All my applications (Office / Adobe CS / Visual Studio) & around 15Gb worth of photos.

W7, games, programs, music, pictures, films etc etc.. soon adds up

I have the full 60GB SSD as C: for Windows 7, Application & Games. All media and documents etc are kept on a Windows Home Server with 2 x 320GB HDs in RAID1.

Using around 65GB of the 74GB available on my 80GB X25-M.

I could easily use more with game installs (so many good games out atm!) , but I juggle least played install directorys to/from my NAS as needed.

Looks like the general trend is everything fits on an 80 for most people - although for some that's because they've made it fit!

I think with a desktop an 80gb SSD with OS/apps/docs & a sensible numer of games will be fine since you can then have your movies & mp3s on a separate HDD. A laptop will be more difficult unless you follow one of the guides on installing a second HDD in place of your optical drive.

To answer the poll I'm currently running at about 25gb on both by laptop and desktop SSD#s. I've got another 2.5tb storage on my desktop for movies & mp3s. I only use my laptop for the internet/office but can stream from the dektop if needed.

c:\ 16.6GB Used on Sammy 64GB SSD (Fresh install on saturday, no games on yet!)
d:\ 407GB Used on Sammy 1.5TB F2
e:\ 68.8GB Used on Sammy 750GB F1
f:\ 119GB Used on WD 500GB AAKS

I could really take out E and F but I like to keep different things on different drives. I also keep a backup of all my documents/pictures on and old 250GB hdd in a USB caddy.
