Worth upgrading from GTX 295 Quad Sli

One of my mates runs a 24" screen at 1920x1200, and thinks its worth upgrading from his gtx quad sli setup to either trifire 5870's or quadfire 5970's. In fairness he hasn't really had any quad sli issues, all games run fast at 1920, and I reckon an upgrade isn't worth it financially or in terms of framerate benefit until at least Fermi and some DX11 games are out. But he isn't listening. I've managed to convince him to either go for a single 5890 or 2x5870's and add later if need be (and possibly a 30" screen). Money for some reason isn't a barrier to him like the rest of us with mortgages. What would you recommend he does ?

I recommend he passes some of the wealth my way.

Seems pointless upgrading to be honest, what real advantage is he gonna see going for a crossfire setup over a setup that already has games flying along?

He's mad. There is no way you need quad sli for a 24" screen. Reviews of 5970's show that at that res they are cpu limited.

He would be better off getting a 30" screen now or a 5970 and a couple more 24" screens.

I said the same thing to him :) Ah...he is not wealthy at all...just someone with no bills to pay hardly. So spends it on PC stuff. I'd do the same if I could. Took me about a year to get the money together to build the rig in my sig below.

Greebo I agree about the screen bit and have been telling him this for some time. The only one he likes is the Dell 30" and he thinks input lag will be a problem. 3 x U241P's would be interesting though :) Right now he does what I do and just plays games at max settings at 1920 and this sometimes allows him to get some benefit out of quad sli by running games with 8xAA or higher.

Tell ur friend to unplug one 295 and see if he notices any difference! At that res a 295 should max everything except crisis. He obviously didnt do his research when he bought them in the first place so good luck getting him to listen to u this time

Maybe sell the 295s as they should get a fairly good price given the stock levels of 5800 series, and spend some money on a 5970 and 2 more 24" monitors (once eyefinity works with crossfire).

As said above it was stupid to buy 2x 295's in the first place neverminde buying a couple of 5890's. Doesnt he have a girlfriend/fiancee? lol.

Please don't make unhelpful comments like that.

In fact the guy got the 295's from me, so he didn't pay full price. Neither did I in fact. So he wasn't 'stupid' as you so vigorously pointed out.

As for them being a waste at 1920, I tend to partially disagree. With 2 295's you can max out batman at 1920 and full physx. In other games, you can raise the level of AA. Not possible with 1 295 without incurring drops in framerates. Same can be said for using 5870's in Crossfire. I don't know why people are so against using sli or crossfire because they think 1920 is too low a res to justify 2 cards. From what I can see, it allows you to raise other eyecandy levels at this res. I take the point someitmes you are cpu limited though.

We did. Framerates in batman, dragon age, mw2 all drop with 1 card due to the fact 1 card can't handle the higher levels of AA at 1920. Especially in batman with physx set to high. 2 cards obviously won't double framerates and you have games which are cpu limited, but there is still a benefit to sli at 1920.

I think buying 2 5870's or 1 5970 will be the route to take. I still think he should wait and see what Fermi brings.

For starters i never said the guy was "stupid" i simply said it was stupid to buy two 295's for 1920x1200 resolution. And how exactly is my reply not helpful? Your thread simply asks if it is worth upgrading from quad sli 295 and obvously my answer was NO.

saying it was stupid for him to buy something like that implies he is stupid and is a personal insult. and what does having a girlfriend got to do with anything ? :)

but I agree, I don't think he should upgrade until at least Fermi is out, and hopefully get a single card solution.

Ok lets get back on topic before it gets out of hand lol. Yes you really need to talk him into waiting it out before he wastes more money :p

Keep the cards and Wait for the 3D projectors! I’d love to see 3D on a massive scale…
(very impressed with Overclockers demo day…still saving for 3D!)
