Office 2010 Public Beta

Is this beta pretty stable?

If it's along the lines of the Windows 7 beta quality, then I would assume it's pretty good for everyday use.

I need Outlook for my phone contacts, and Excel everyday for important things.

Will need to remove my Office Ultimate 2007 to run this I guess?

No beta is stable for important things. I wouldn't use if unless it's for testing purposes until it's been fully tested by a lot of the public.

outlook is pretty shocking. gmail/imap is terrible (works fine in live mail) and the threaded conversations are a joke. it groups together messages with the same "subject" even if they are totally unrelated from different senders. i guess it's time to "send a smiley". :p

but it does look pretty. :D

Updated products bring new features and security. They may also take advantage of new technology not available previously - for example new Operating Systems and protocol.

If you don't need new features then there is no point in upgrading until MS stop releasing updates/patches for it.

Not sure what problem people are having with GMail and IMAP. Mine works just fine! I have noticed in the last half hour that Outlook is a little bit eager to make anything with the same subject a conversation as marc2003 has also discovered :p

gmail is just far too slow. also i can't delete messages from the server using outlook. it just creates it's own "deleted items" folder/label which is completely useless.

New interface is horrendous in Outlook, Microsoft don't half hate borders :p

All I want is the Ribbon across all applications, as far as asthetics goes, 2007 is perfect.

You need to empty the Deleted Items folder inside Outlook. Its the same as the Recycle Bin within Windows. You should be able to set Outlook to nuke that folder when it closes.

I do agree that they should at least use the Bin folder GMail already has.

Can't say much about speed. It could probably be a bit quicker, but then I did a nuke recently so don't have much in my GMail inbox.

Has anybody uploaded any screenshots yet?

here's one of outlook....

The Calendar etc all look pretty much the same as 2007.

I think it is quite pretty, though I think some improvements could be made - it doesn't feel quite as polished as 2007 but then again it is a BETA. And to be honest after a while you tend to ignore what it looks like as you're too busy working. At least I am! :p

EDIT: d'oh, beaten to it :p

Thanks for the screenshots. Looks pretty nice (even the black theme which I'm not usually a fan of), just needs to be able to sync with Google Reader for RSS feeds and it would be the perfect app.

Well, when I say important, the things I'm working on aren't like changing or so vital that if a file gets messed up I won't have a backup.

I think I will give this a try soon.

Well I take back what I said earlier about IMAP as it is working on my home computer so its either some junk left in from the 2007 install or something strange going on with my laptop at work. :D

it doesn't delete the mail. it just removes the labels. it's still in "all mail".
This also happens using GMail/IMAP with Outlook 2007 - in order to delete stuff and have it disappear from the "All Mail" label/folder, you need to drag it to the Gmail Bin rather than using the client's delete/purge function.

I have several email accounts using a mixture of Gmail and my own host, and the inconsistent IMAP behaviour is a PITA to say the least. I think in all fairness though it's simply a consequence of (trying to) reconcile two different philosophies, rather than a failing of the client itself - mapping Gmail's labels to the conventional "folder" paradigm ends up in a bit of a mess IMHO, with neither system working as well as it should.

and leave it there for 30 days until google delete it? i want to get rid manually right now. :p

it works fine with windows live mail. you just drag the mail to the "bin" and then when you delete the files there, it deletes them from the server as well. :)
