James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

I like overbloan disaster movies. But its like the forget the people now. They have these fantastic effects, and these tiny little people somewhere in the middle of them with hardly a mention.

The original Posiedon was a great disaster film for just that the people, the characters and what they endured, which wasnt too unfeasible.

Exactly... Unless you care and believe in the people, you don't really care or believe what happens to them...

I haven't see it so can't make comparisons... But Poseidon and Deep Impact I suspect are not good comparisons to 2012? I'd imagine they're far more even handed (realistic) character driven pieces? Not something surely Emmerich bother himself with too much. Sure he throws the idea in there, but it's only as an excuse for the character to move onto the next peril :)

I guess with action cinema you're either an Armageddon or Deep Impact person... I found Armageddon cheap and cheesy... I'm more your Deep Impact person I guess :)

Armageddon is garbage but I liked The Day After Tomorrow. Godzilla and Independence Day not so much but I'm happy for a film to be full of loads of unnecessary CGI so long as its entertaining at some level.

The problem with Armageddon wasn't down to an over-abundance of CGI though, its just too cringe worthy in places even for me.

You know he's planning on ID4 sequels don't you

*prepares for more cgi mayhem and distruction of well known locations*

Remains to be seen whether he's stil got it or not though after so long writing for TV. And mincing around on Entourage!

Meh who am I kidding, of course he'll still have it.

Let's hope he hasn't gone all John Carpenter on us :)

for anyone interested, the Under Pressure documentary of the making of the Abyss has been uploaded on youtube, linky, love this documentary, got it on my special edition laserdisc :)
