Argh, need a smaller car....

4.48m according to Parkers.

So it's a Mondeo that wont fit, a 10k 330d that will end up getting dented or a 4k Focus that might just about fit... Did they do a 330td?

Probably miles away from Exeter, sorry, based in Gib Im not too hot on searching via UK postcodes and such
How likely is it that 32-35mpg is going to be achieveable from any petrol engine over 1.6 litres? Added to that, I would have thought the chances of anything 'warm' would have even slimmer chances of seeing mpg in the 30s?

It's only a 1.8t, you'll get that on a run. I expect the 6th gear helps to keep it off boost when cruising at 70mph. Fuel consumption isn't always directly proportional to the size of the engine.

Hmm, not really its all to do with how hard the engine is working at a given speed.

Whats gearing got to do with the car being on and off boost, i could be in 3rd gear doing 80mph off boost.

Going on what mine does..

Roughly speaking, im getting around 25mpg around town (mostly 2nd/3rd gear, 15-30mph, lots of stop/start), and 32-36mpg on motorways. Can do 38-40mg if you switch on Cruise at 120km/h (roughly 70mph) in 6th gear.

I find that easily doable in a 2.0 mk3 Mondeo and I don't drive slowly.

You're telling me you can accelerate and cruise at 80 in 3rd, all off boost? It probably depends on how much you need to mash the noisy pedal as well...

Cool, that's better than I expected to be honest. I've been too conditioned to derv :(. On my last petrol engine (MGZR+ 120) I never saw over 30, but i guess the combination of low gearing and driving like a moron was the main cause of that. And then the Astra 1.8 I had for a few months after that was a lemon anyway, so don't really have a lot of petrol experience to go on!

Seriously?!

Most if not all petrol engines between 1.6 and 2.5 litres are capable of averaging MPG in the 30's. Some of the ones towards the lower end of that scale will do 40's. It's only around town you'll find the MPG will drop into the 20's but then you'll get 20's around town from your X5, I certainly do from a manual 530d.

Even if I'm in a hurry on the Motorway the average mpg on a long trip in my 3 litre petrol car will be about 31-32mpg, observing the speed limit its much higher. Same with smaller engined cars. Most 1.6-2.5 litre petrol cars will average mpg both in town and out of town thats higher than the average you get from an automatic diesel X5.

Even the current Porsche 911 has a COMBINED fuel consumption figure of 29.7mpg which means on a run, you are north of 30mpg.

Hint: We do not live in a world where every petrol does 15mpg and every diesel 60mpg.

lol? Was getting 39MPG on a dual carriage way or motorway in my bimmer which was a 2.5l. The six cylinder engines just tick over nicely.

No you didn't say anything about accelerating you said about maintaining speed:

I expect the 6th gear helps to keep it off boost when cruising at 70mph.

If the turbo is in boost or not (in terms of it shoving move air into the engine) has nothing to do with the RPM at which the engine is turning, its to do with the manifold pressure.

Was there reallly any need for that? I could understand your response if I had said it wasn't possible and that anyone who thought otherwise was wrong.

My question was based on my owning an MG when I drove like a moron, a motorbike, that averaged mid-20s, an astra that was a lemon, my dads 530i Auto that he does 90 miles a day in and averages 26mpg, my brothers Z3 3.0si Manual, that he does about the same mileage in and the impressions I've had of other posts on this forum. Comparing that to my 1.9tdi Leon, which averages 42mpg, my X5 that averages 36.5mpg, my dad's old e39 530d averaging 34mpg, my father-in-law-to-be's ML320 CDI that averages 28mpg, would mean that I just wasn't sure how likely it would be. So it was just a question, and a valid one at that, I feel.
