Your Whisky collections!

OK, other than Soco (shoot me, it's fine), I can't stand any.

But then again, that might be because i've only tried rubbish.

Any suggestions for the whisky virgin? Something for my first time, but will be gentle with me AND call the next day?

I did have talisker, it's gone now.

I currently have none but I have my eyes set on a few to swallow. Such as laphraoig. (I can't spell it)

At the moment I have 2 bottles in the house. I always have a standard blended scotch in the house like a Grants or a Bells to use with a mixer.

Or if I want something nice on its own then I usually have a good Bourbon in, Makers Mark and Bulleit being my Favourites.

Recently bought a bottle of Jamesons 10yo Irish Whiskey, to put a splash in the Christmas Pud I made at the weekend. Of course I had to have a drink as I cooked..... I was very surprised, was really nice, very smooth and mellow, a little woody. Was the first Irish whisky I'd tried !

Since we're on topic, anyone got any suggestions for a similar Irish Whisky, a little more up market?

Out of your list I've tried

Glenfiddich 12 yr
Glenfiddich 12 yr Speical Reserve
Glenfiddich 18 yr
Glenmorangie Original
Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban
Highland Park 12 yr
Jamesons Irish Whiskey
Jamesons 12 yr special reserve.

My favorites were the Glenfiddich 18yr & the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban. THe Highland Park 12yr was disgusting.

What the Glenfiddich 21 yr like, and about how much does it cost?

Thanks

Bought two years ago at Kuala Lumpur duty free, if I recall it was £50 for 70 cl i'm currently after the 30 year old, best price so far is £130 from selfridges in brum

Cheap 'n cheerful way to start off my collection. Had hoped it would have lasted longer than one night though (obviously not all to myself). :(

Jura is next on the list.

Highland Park is a good general all rounder. On special if you have a Waitrose near you for a very reasonable £21.

I only ever have one in the flat at a time, at the moment it's Jura.
Been missing the Balvenie Signature though, it's next up.

Few with Highland Park here, how do you find it? For me, it's the worst I've tasted.

I'd disagree - the highland park is a pretty smoked flavor, not something everyone would like.

I'd find a pub/friend that has a decent selection of whiskys and try a couple of different types, ideally a smokey, a peated and a rich single malt. From there you can start to understand what you like and fine tune your selection :)

If you jump straight into a very extreme flavored whisky you could easily put yourself off totally

I'll second this - it took me quite a while to get accustomed to the smokey whiskies, even though I liked the 'normal' ones. Laphroaig was the initial culprit, but I like the peatey ones now.

If anyone has £175 or so knocking about, I can't recommend the Nikka Yoichi 20 year old highly enough - head and shoulders above anything else I've had. Unfortunately I'm currently in possession of neither a bottle of it, nor a spare 175 notes.

I of course respect your opinion but you're totally wrong ;) :D. HP is a good, nice all rounder. Just enough of a smoke to be worth it, I mean it's not Laphroaig or anything but it's a decent drop.

Now Bushmills, thats the worst under the sun if you ask me.

I agree with the Highland Park - it's a lovely drop and quite light with just enough smoke to add a nice roundness of flavour. It has more of the peaty taste that my personal favourite Springbank does but I would rate it a not too distant second in flavour. Highland Park 12Yo does itself justice and I would recommend it as a decent first Scotch. Springbank tho takes my top for a reasonably priced maximum flavor whisky, the length of the flavor is just awesome.

Just added a Highland Park 12Yo to the shelf.
