What was before the Big Bang?

i think red dwarf has it spot on: after the big bang its expansion, eventually expansion slows until finally it stops. mass will then pull itself back together by mavity, and so the universe will slowly collapse in on itself crushing and collapsing inwards (the big crunch) until it forms one central ball of mass, after its collapse to an infinitesimal small state it has so much pent up energy that it explodes into another big bang, so there for, the universe is in a never ending cycle of big bang, big crunch, big bang etc etc.
 
Before the "Big Bang" there was the "Big Soup" and along came the "Big Chef" and you know what happenen next.

yes thats right mavity gets weaker the further apart the things are, but it doesn't disappear it just get less & less. so eventually when the expansion stops expanding the gravitational pull between all the mass points in the universe will be at an all time low, but will still be there even as minute as it is will eventually over billions of years start to pull itself inwards.

Question is - if the forces get so weak, what's to stop the dimensions unravelling* and causing a collapse? Sort of like a universal dimensional hernia. Once close enough mavity causes dimensional compression again and we're back to a single point.. before it goes bang.

* assumes that mavity has a part to play in keeping other dimensions compressed.

Ahh but which came first? The question or the answer (thinking) that caused the question?

Besides even if human kind was supplied with the correct answer it means absolutely nothing.
You die. Human decedents with have become a large pool of average gene composition that your genetics will be so long ago they have no meaning other than being another iteration of life.
Next, if this pocket of life doesn't figure out a way of driving itself beyond the atmosphere then once the sun goes bang it really won't matter.

In short if the universe is a bang-squash cycle effectively creating a pocket of life within the universe for a finite time, then our planet is a smaller incarnation as the pocket of life is created before being destroyed by the sun.
Only of you can migrate between pockets then it becomes useful to know what's beyond the universal pocket of life as that's the next hurdle before it goes pop.

All this bubbles and pop talk makes it sound like we're just in a bottle of lemonade.. and someone undid the top.
