No, I wouldn't shoot a child for walking into a bear enclosure, nor would I shoot the parents. Nor would I shoot the mentally handicapped guy. Nor would I shoot a non-mentally handicapped guy. It was a statement made in jest at the stupidity of the situation, not a statement of intent.

I've seen the bear enclosure in Berne and been inside to see the bears with the keepers (with the bears separated from us by bars) and I thought it was pretty horrible and very outdated. Was a few years ago so not sure if improved now. Poor guy / poor bear. A lack of empathy for a guy with mental problems doesn't come accross very well.

There are bear pits in Berne, across one of the bridges, right besides the road/footpath. It's just a (not very tall) stone wall and 15 - 20' below there are a few bears. You can buy food at a stall to throw down to them.
By todays standards, its a strange set-up and I remember thinking how bored and generally depressed they looked and how easy it would be for someone to fall in.
The bears just mope about while people throw food at them. I guess this one thought it must be the Xmas menu or something.
