exactly, it should be paid for by bt or people in areas wanting the better service

That would make the per-capita cost incredibly high, hence spreading it out across the whole population. It's the same thing we do with all services: you pay for the NHS regardless of whether you use it, you pay for the fire service regardless of whether you use it, you pay for the police force regardless of whether you use it. It's 2009, access to broadband internet is a pretty important right.

It is abit communist, however it is the only way most will get faster speeds for a long time.

under £10 a month is very cheap and as Openreach have a monolpoly on all the copper it means fibre is going to be a big risk even for BT with most of the infrastructure never mind a new entity.

However we wouldn't have a monopoly if it wasn't for socialism in the first place but then again if it wasn't for socialism we wouldn't have a telephone network at all.

It's not communist for heaven's sake. If this is communist, then so is every other tax that pays for things for the wider populous.

I'm also not convinced by this tax on tax thing, but I'll wait for the pre budget report to see how they explain it in there.

Sealed in my Sarcophagus.
"to fund the introduction of superfast broadband internet "

They really need to stop saying that. It's a lie.

The government is lying to us? surely they cant get away with that! :D

Labour are a bunch of ******** who need to be put up against a wall and shot. TAX TAX TAX, its the only solution they have to most issues.

In an ideal world things like broadband infrastructure would be government owned and paid for by normal taxes ( then the services rented and offered by companies ) in a similar way to railtrack and the train operators. Broadband accessibility should be something thats provided to all ( where technically possible ) regardless of price, like bus services USED to be.

Let the country run and pay for the infrastructure, and let private companies BUY the right to use it to provide the services, thereby helping the cost to the taxpayer to be lowered over time.

2MB download and 512k upload should be the MINIMUM legal requirement to all homes and businesses ( where its physically possible to do so, not just expensive ) in my broadband utopia as described above :p

Exactly. This is just like forcing private bus companies to run unprofitable/less profitable bus services in rural areas: people have a right to transport that isn't affected by the profits of bus companies, just as people have a right to broadband that isn't affected by the profits of telecoms companies.

IT really is a joke, I cannot believe they charge tax on tax.

Now someone create me a Yo Dawg "I heard you like paying tax, so we put tax on your tax so you can pay tax whilst you pay tax."

:D

everyone would like a fast connection but only people on lower than 512k need one...

legal torrents (yer right)

on demand TV (nice but not necessary, why not download them and watch them off line)

Porn, pirated films / music / applications, watching a tv program now and not in 3 hour all good but not worth investing billions on...

are people seriously saying we should spend untold millions so they can pirate software, while browing the internet and playing Wow???

Seems like another benefit type scam to me, the working class pay for the scum of society to survive.

Just like those with broadband will be paying for those living in the middle of no where to get access.. why not use satellite!

I have no problem with a "Broadband Tax" as long as:

a) There's no hiking and stealth charges.
b) It ALL goes towards faster broadband, and not wasted on other crap.

Well (a) has already been broken, and i'm fairly sure the government will quickly start dipping into it to fund moat cleaners/porn/etc.

So i'm heavily against it.

At the end of the day, it's BT's fault anyway. They should have started laying better cable before, rather than whining about it now.
