£6 broadband levy may be trebled for homes with multiple lines

So I will be paying a tax that will never go away for some 20 people to get their porno faster?

They can pay for it themselves, no one made them live in the middle of nowhere.

exactly, and but he looks of it if you have virgin media you will be taxed twice if you have there phone line!

I would rather see IPs manage to provide their current advertised bandwidth before paying for faster internet.

We pay for 16 meg broadband, but only get 1-4 meg.

At times my T mobile HSDPA connection is faster.

no you pay for "up to" 16mb.

you could downgrade to an 8mb package (unless there are caps at that level or something) and you'll still get 1-4 mb.

OH! MY! GOD! My three phone lines will cost £18 a year more for a while!! I'm ruined!!

Non news of the week, I welcome broadband development in rural areas.

Currently the internet doesn't work when:
A) it's Raining.
B) it's Cold out.
C) it's Hot.
D) more than a few people in the county want to use it.

The problem is in a lot of cases they cannot supply it because the infrastructure does not allow it.

Yea, but other people are getting 20 megs and making me jealous :(.

I want my 16 meg first before paying for more, but I dont pay for the landline so Im fine (I pay for my mobile broadband, but get to use my families landline).

I replaced the need for a landline and broadband when I got a 50% employment discount for life with T mobile :).

The only problem is when I have no HSDPA signal :(.

£18 is pair of school shoes for a kid for some parents though. It is absurd that they are making this tax. The internet has been around for like 10 years or more or less. Why now?

Because of the "recession" might as well make the most of the problems and add more problems on top.

This is meant to fund broadbad development, but is it realy needed? I don't know about VM, but BT are currently rolling out FTTC which will dramaticaly increase speeds in areas that get it, and allow it to more easily compete with VM at high speeds.

As long students don't have to pay the tax i won't be overly fussed. Students need more leeway really. Make taxes and bills full price for students then what hope is there that the clever ones will stay. Anyway, that is another kettle of fish.

Do students really need three phone lines? If so, for what?

It's £21.15 inc VAT but only if you've got three phone lines so a headline figure of £18 (or £21.15) is somewhat misleading. More likely you've be paying £14.10 inc VAT so a shade over £1.15 p/m if you've got two phone lines.

If this money is genuinely (almost) all used to improve Britain's internet infrastructure then I'm not bothered about paying it - ideally the carriers/backbone provider should be paying for it but since they've apparantly failed to make adequate provision for it I'm prepared to pay that little bit extra to see other people benefit. However I'd like to see some form of clause inserted with the supply of the funds to these companies relating to what they may charge people for providing services and/or changes to their lines etc so that may act as an incentive for them to make provisions for future events or face strictures for having to come cap in hand.

Well we do have a phone line so we will get a little bit of tax right?
So am I right to believe the tax will go to completely replacing all the copper wiring with fibre optics?

Also surely letting everyone on the internet, and to have it fast will only increase piracy?

Bring it on I say, I'm happy to pay £6 (or even a lot more to be honest) a year if it means I'll be able to get faster than 512k (yes, 512k) speed broadband.

You don't honestly think you will actually see an increase in speed do you? And I don't see why I should pay for you to get better speeds, that should be down to the provider.

Just Lol at the 'tax on tax'.

Welcome to society, where occasionally—just occasionally—people club together and do things to help each other out. The ones that aren't autistic quasi-sociopathic man-children, anyway.

Oh great...I got a big gas bill this month. How do you want to pay me BTF or PP?

I don't see why I and others should pay this tax.
