Nokia N900

Does Ovi maps have turn by turn navigation, or is there another Sat-Nav app available for the N900 which does?

Is there an ebook reader app available for the N900?

If not it looks like I'll just order the HD2.

Review of the N900 on GSM arena now up:

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n900-review-421.php

Seem quite positive on a whole

Looking at this:
* UI only works in landscape mode
* No smart and voice dialing
* Outdated camera interface and features
* No GPS software bundled
* No MMS
* No voice recorder
* No FM radio application (despite that the hardware's there)

It kind of looks like a luxury sports car with no wheels, no seats and dashboard mounted back to front on rear window.

It has to be asked - what's the point of releasing this phone onto the market in this unfinished state? I can only imagine any retailer that sells it to large number of people for half a grand will have riots at their front doors week later.

So it isn't quite the mother of all phones to end all phones?

Its not being marketed as a phone, fancy that.

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n900-review-421p4.php There is a map application running there, 810 also comes with a gps app, it does your position, favourites, poi, ect. However you got to pay for routing and voice.

There are other gps software available for 810, but I never played with them. On a motorbike its a pain to test it out. Especially in the constant rain that we get here.

Regarding the camera, what do you expect, its a PDA, not a dslr. If I want decent coffee, I would not go for instant one. If I want a good camera, I will go for a dslr.

Looking at the pics they managed to get, its decent enough to make a picture if you are in the middle of town and some unexpected circuis turned up, but for any proper photography, I will stick to a proper camera thanks.

Then half of the review went around complaining about the applications, who cares? Here is the whole point of the OS, you don't like the app, use another one. For 810 there are at least 3 different pdf apps, word processors, file editors, ect. Give it time and it will be ported, you can even try to simply re-compile it yourself, pending what they changed API wise between switching X server, if anything.

You see, this is exactly why I am still saying don't buy this as a phone, buy this as a PDA.

But people have been hyping this up as 'The Phone of the Decace' etc. for the last couple of months, regardless of what Nokia choose to market it as.

So what? 21 million Iphone sales, and we all know how good that is. Experience tells me not to trust opinion of people I don't know.

The below arent true:

In additioon I find the camera fine, sure not so many oprtions, but I wouldnt say below par (lets face it do you really change many settings on your mobile camera).

The landscape mode is a massive downside to this 'phone', in its current state, its a internet tablet. Hopefully with new firmware upgrade sometime in Dec, it will reslove this issue, along with MMS.

Like I mentioned before this 'phone' needs a large warning - it isnt really a phone. Its a great communicator. Sorry Im too busy to write a bit of a review, will do tonight/the morning.

That's from gsmarena's review. So, you're saying it has GPS maps, recorder and radio app?

bloody nokia. any news on when an update will be released with these things working?
need it to function as a basic phone (by that i mean call, text, mms to a good standard as basic)

If you don't like it, there is always the second hand market ;)

lol. i can't be doing with a crap phone full stop. i wont buy it if it is not functioning the way i need it to as standard :p
unless of course, you are going to pay me a lot of money for it :P

£350 for the handset is as much as I will go. Any more and its just too expensive for what it is. Considering I got 810 which does all of the above anyway, just slower :p

And yes it can make calls via skype :p

Had a play with it for 5 mins in the Nokia store - general impressions were very good and I will be buying myself one. Sometimes it can be a little clunky to move screens etc but I can live with it.

Ordered the phone from MPD - anyone know anymore delivery dates etc yet? Is it still going to be the 4th Dec onwards? Will they have enough for recent pre-orders etc?

Seems the info from them is very lacking.

depends when you pre-ordered. If you are before mid November you might be in the first batch. Rumours are flying they have stock tonight and will start shiping tomorow and wed...and I just saw a flying pig.

If you really want it, go to a nokia flagship store where you can buy it over the counter with a vodafone contract as of Friday.

I honestly didn't realise you could do that and I went in there, although I wouldn't be able to get back into London for weeks, shame. Anyhow guess I just wait, as long as its before Xmas I will be happy.
