Q6600 still good chip

An amazing chip (as is the 8800GT, I think)

Q6600 & 8800 they are like fish'n'chips in the computing world, most popular price/performance CPU/GPU combo for a while.

100% best CPU I've owned, having said that, the early C2D E6300 was a great clocker, 1.86GHz to 3.4GHz no problem!

Yeeep =)

Getting max frames on L4D2 on full settings, with my 8800GT

Until the Q9550 is sub £90 (in my dreams), I can't see the need to look past my 7500 @ 4.0Ghz. The Q6600 isn't even an option until more games use the quad cores, until then I'll stick with my nice frequency at a nice price!

I'm really happy with my Q6600(3GHz) too, it meets all my needs. However, I do have one concern, Temperature. I bought an Ultima system from OC and it has always idled at approx 60c with a room temp of 22c. I thought this was normal until i installed Windows 7. The day after the installation and only the day after the installation, the temp idled at around 38c! Can anyone eplain why this would happen? It's back up to 60c now.

The cooler is the Actic Pro 7 freezer. I bought some thermal paste hoping maybe heat wasn't being distributed correctly, but it's made no difference.

I really want to get my Temps down because the fan is doing my head in. Any ideas?

Case: Antec 300 with lots of airflow.

More love for the Q6600, Bought mine well over a year ago for a tad over 100 pounds. I picked a G0 sample and have had it clocked to 3.95 1.49vcore pretty much all the time since then, my watercooling pump recently packed in and I'm down to 3.4hz 1.3vcore on the standard intel quad cooler. Love the chip to bits, I really dont have a problem with it. I have been very tempted to get an I7 just to get to that elusive 4ghz speed that I could never get stable on the Q6600, but money constraints and the realisation of how little performance would be gained has halted me. Hope it lives for ever, its going into the second pc when I eventually do settle for I9/I7 refresh

That is way to hot, Mine idles at around 28.C to 33.c and at 3.6 ghz under burn test max is 72.c...

I had an artic freezer on mine before the H50 and the temps were only marginally higher.
What volts are you sticking into it ? and when you did the paste did you use a tiny amount spread over the chip just enough to cover it ? I,m even using the same case..??

According to Uguru, cpu volt seems to vary between 1.33 V and 1.35 V. the CPU fan is doing 2700rpm. I put a small amount of thermal paste on as per instruction from online forums and Youtube videos.

Thats not good, to much paste can be a problem but i'm sure you no that.
what MB are you useing is there a problem with bios readings which there might be a update for, or try using the cooler that came with the chip to see if there is any diffrence.
I am using the heatsink and fan from Intel and there has never been a need to change from that and the max temp I am getting is 45c.

Whan I put this post on I did not expect is kind of Response, I so glad I did because the Q6600 is going to save me a lot of money just no need to do any upgrades for some time bloody marvellous

Small world I had just this thought the other day concerning my E6600 running at 3.4Ghz, I had thought of getting an Cosair cpu water cooling unit and then go to E8600 and see if i could get +1Ghz on that. But from what people are saying the later Duo's didn't clock as well at all?

Do you guys think an +800Mhz is possible 3.33 to 4.1 seems to be quite a good return, plus I have no idea what i want for X-Mas :D

NB: As to the discussion about the idle temps and the guy with a stupid over clock on a standard fan/heat sink not being in line with the thread, I would disagree being a casual OC'er visitor/supporter is does matter that the information within these forums is accurate so that people like myself who's main interest isn't the Over Clocking scene can get a sense of what is achievable and not pie in the sky. At the moment it's a current thread but give we are 6 months down the line and someone like myself finds the thread doing a search I would be WTF. So I think it does matter.

My E8400 hits 4ghz easily using just auto settings on my board. It will post and load windows at 4.4 but the temps went skyhigh under prime...

How exactly does the 'new' generation of Quad Core LGA775 chips compare with the good old Q6600? I've been considering the leap to quad core, but I'm not entirely sure if it is worth going for an older Q6600?

That is the upgrade I went for after trying a Q6700, E6600 to E8500. I got better performance out of an E8500 at 4.0GHz and I haven't even tried going higher.
The E8500 can be had cheaply if you look around.

I'm using the same motherboard as you, Abit Pro 35. I don't have the stock cooler, it came with the Arctic Freezer when I bought it from Overclockers.

was there a paste pad on the heatsink most of the modern one's come with paste already on the heat sink if you put paste on the chip as well then it will
not work and heat will not transfer, just a thought as I have see this happen a couple of times. I'm just trying to think of what might be the problem, did you set the fan and heat settings in the bios, if its any good I will post my settings for you to see if there is any change in temp.

The e6600 was an amazing chip as well, lots of people on this forum had them clocked over 3GHz. Hopefully intel will release another "6600" chip so we know it's good ;)

My E6600 has been running happily at 3.4Ghz for almost two years now I have good temps in the Antec 900 case with very large Ninja Scythe HS+fan. After that I hit a brick wall mobo wise though :( lots seem to have gone to 3.6Ghz and some to 3.8Ghz.

I removed the paste that was already on there, wasn't much. I would really appreciate seeing the settings you have.

What is your system temperature on idle anyway?
