Test-Tube Bacon!

hmmm, all depends, I like my meat with a little fat, adds flavour, so if it's literally just a lump of meat, I'm not sure, ...

I'm the opposite. The leaner the cut of meat the better. So, if in the future they release test tube meat, which is uber lean, thats probably the only meat I will be eating. In fact, I would insist on eating test-tube meat and nothing else.

Sounds horrible. How much crap is going to be in this, surely cant be good for you.

Probably a lot less than in slaughtered pig bacon?

Sounds like a grand idea but it will surely mess up a lot of things. A lot.

Like anything, we should probably wait it out for further developments as mentioned in the article.

I bet it would make great sandwich meat. Better than the "reconstituted" crap they sell in the Supermarkets...

"100% pork, reconstituted with water. And starch. And preservatives. And flavourings. And colourings. But honest, the bit that might be meat is 100% Pig. Or maybe Cow, but who's counting, eh?"

A nice slice of 100% petri-dish pork would be lovely.

This is awesome. As mentioned, its a solution to the issues with farming as well. Meat could be grown in a factory rather than having to keep and feed a load of animals.

I honestly didn't think they'd be able to achieve this so soon though.

This is my feeling as well.

The cure for world hunger is definitely on the cards, however, we are a good few decades away from being able to do this on a mass scale and seeing arificially grown meat in supermarkets.

I wouldn't have thought so. It depends what this synthetic solution to grow the meat they come up with is. It could cost as much to produce as real meat.

The price might come down in the future though. Animal grown meat (well decent stuff) will always be expensive because its a costly process whereas if they're producing it on a conveyor belt then they can produce as much or as little as necessary in order to suit demand.

Initially it will. But as better/cheaper techniques are developed the price will come down. And as the amount of synthetic meat sales increase, the price per unit should also reduce.

I'm very confident that synthetic meat will be cheaper to grow than real livestock. Consider that in England at least, farmers are paid subsidies to keep their farms running/operational. Without subsidies, most if not all farms would go bust and close down. So, if the Government asked traditional farmers to grow synthetic meat instead and subsidised them, it could be a realistic and cheaper option.
