Anyone else interested in the new VW Polo GTI?

No way? Seriously? The POLO?!

What are they smoking? It's just... some more Polo. A little bit better.

There were some pretty decent new cars in the shortlist this year, heck even the new Astra deserved it more for actually being not a pile of crap this time around.

Why on earth is the POLO car of the year?!

It's a VW Polo. Without exception every previous version of the Polo 'GTI' has been a crud drivers car so why would it suddenly change now? Yawn, can I have a Clio 200 or something instead please.

Have some faith Fox, the Golf GTi was going through a crappy spell then the Mk5 came along to fix things. Maybe this is the Polos time :p

I'm not waiting at all - keeping the vRS for another couple of years at least.

Actually I meant in general. The "new" Fabia vRS has been "in the pipeline" for quite a while now.

I wonder if Skoda will even bother with one this gen, it's just too late now.

The previous Fabia vRS had quite a short run so I guess it is still possible. I dread to think what it will look like though :p Also if they did I would hazard a guess that it would be diesel powered and around the 150bhp mark so not really comaprable to the Polo if that does end up being a 180bhp petrol.

In all fairness the previous gen Fabia in non-vRS trim looked as crap as the current one.

I don't think we'll see another Fabia vRS.

/me sits in the "totally fail to see why anybody would be interested in this" camp.

That is because your better half doesn't think that anything bigger than a shoe is "too big to park" and anything other than a 3/5 door hatch is "over the top"

With those criteria (bearing in mind that I do nearly as many miles in her car as she does) if it has to be a small hatch it might as well be a quick small hatch with something resembling build quality :p

With those criteria spending 20 grand is stupid.

Yes but because they can afford it, they will spend it. The criteria are, I need a small car because I'm an idiot and I don't know how to drive and I MUST spend all this money burning a hole in my wallet/purse/offshore bank account. Such a person isn't going to care about the RS Clio 200, because it's a Renault and will probably catch fire. They won't have time for a Fiesta, because it's a Ford and we all know how crap Fords are, right? It's the same type of person that buys an X5 with the biggest/most powerful engine combo and then drives it to the shops once a week. VW have really done a good job of convincing the world that they are a premium brand, when they clearly aren't.

My problem with this car is that its got 7 gears WTF! Also why is everything now a days coming with really small engines and pumping out a load of power. Its nuts. The new Corsa VXR has over 200hp. A car that small shouldnt have that amount of power.

These days manufactures prefer smaller, forced induction engines for emissions reasons. And why an earth shouldn't a Corsa have 200BHP?!

Your examples suck. If you only drive to the shops once per week then an X5 with the biggest engine possible is a very good choice, economy doesnt matter when you drive that little, so why not do your low mileage in a battleship rather than a silly little shoe?

Why do you need 500BHP to go to the shops? Why not buy an X5 or whatever with the smallest engine if you're only going to pootle around town in it?
