should i get a 965 125w or not?

Ok cool gareth170! :)

Would be good to nick/loan a spare CPU of a friendly overclocker if you think yours is suspect . . .swapping out components is a quick way to nail these elusive glitches although not everyone has spares . .

Can you be more specific about the errors, I'm not quite sure from what you have said? . . . . sounds like your PC was fine until your last GPU swap?

Is the system overclocked? did you try it at stock? . . is there any chance you bOrked the O/S> . . . . . are all the leads working fine, faulty SATA cable etc

Tell me are the BIOS settings on [Auto] or did you manually adjust some of them? . . .what is the CPU-NB voltage set to? . . .I had a slight rebooting under load issue when overclocking the Athlon II the first time, nailed it down to the CPU-NB not getting enough juice . .

Any more info you can give will be useful . . .
my friend is running a intel system so i don't have another spare am3 chip, i have only got am2+ chips

the errors are random and about anything. e.g internet explorer crashs, desktop crashs, whole screen goes a shy blue (nice colour really :p) ect, ect.

the system as been overclocked for about 3-4 mouths, which i manuelly,
CPU-NB was at 1.25 then i upped it to 1.30v but still the same. did a fresh install of win7 but still same

now i'm thinking it's heat or cpu voltage that as degraded the cpu because i have underclocked it and it's working fine.

but when i contacted amd they said my cpu is fine up to 1.425v max / 70c tcare max... i kept the voltage at 1.4v. i don't know the core temp because the sensor is broke.

anyway my gf said she'll buy me the 965 for an xmas gift.

well if you underclocked it and its fine 95% chance of it being the CPU being unstable during OC or overheating and the system starts locking up to cool it down.

have you tried running running prime or IBT with core temp?

cause if your having heat issues its only going to get worse for you with a quad and it needs to be sorted,

what case have you got? how many fans/what fans and where are they placed?

as i said above the core temp sensor is crap, it shows 20c in a 19-21c room so running core temp or any other temp program will be wrong.

i've got a xcilo A380 case with 4 case fans (38cm side fan intake, 25cm front fan intake, 17cm top fan outtake, 12cm rear fan outtake)...

anyway i've just received the 965 . ill see how that goes

Sorry to highjack the thread. But would you mind explaining a bit more this rebooting issue your having please? As I seem to be having one at the moment where my system turns off and reboot its self. No reboot screen, just like someone has pressed the re-set button.

I'm in the middle of troubleshooting it at the mo. But any info you can give i'm sure would be helpful.

Thank You

Sorry to highjack the thread.
No your not! :p

You evil thread hijacker you! . . . the only reason you would do this is because you decided that if you make your own dedicated support thread no one will come to assist you heh! :p

Make a new thread and I'll help out! . . .This thread belongs to gareth170!

Any joy with the new cpu???

1.384v on mine which again is a bit higher that it says it should be... but i ve found it goes up to 3.8hz with very few problems, and 3.7hz is what I plan to leave it at for a stable and cool oc- not had to tamper with voltage at all doing those. (overclocking noob so being very careful with it)

Got the black edition and so just had to overclock a bit (going to sort out a proper oc once i can get a decent GPU).

Out of curiosity Gareth, does yours run at 3.4 or another number close to that, mine is 3.392 (one of the multipliers is at 199.5 but not sure of the reason-signal its been oc'd maybe?)

its normal all cpus waver the speed, its to do with the motherboards generate clock, some do it slightly over & some do it slightly under.

mine is 3.41 at stock ,

update...

i think i've sloved the random errors. by downgrading the bios. ;)...

i know the 720 was faulty because of the screen goes a shy blue colour randomly, with the 965 this doesn't happen.

I really hope you got back control of your PC mate, I know what a pain in the *** these random errors can be . . .it can drive you potty over time! . . . it's happened to me a lot in the past so I understand how eventally you just want the problem gone and throw money at the problem!

I was worried that you would splurge on a new processor and the issue would still be there . . .fingers crossed you are all sorted now albeit with a slimmer wallet! :(

tbh i forgot that i flashed it with the latest beta bios afew weeks ago and i think the random errors started afew days after that but the other issue was happening before that...

anyway do u think i should rma the 720 as the screen goes a shy blue colour randomly?

I would RMA any hardware that I was 100% sure of being faulty . . . give it a bit more time with your new chip until your sure the system is perfect, at that point your gonna need to swap back to the older chip, if you do that and the problems begin again RMA with confidence . . .

ill give it 2-4 weeks to see how it goes.

p.s: you quoted me in your last post for no reason, the original is just about it so you have in effect doubled up the text and made the thread harder to read . . .
i always quote to the person message that im asking or answering to. because while im typing somebody else may post something below the person im asking or answering to
