*** In Stock Now *** Sapphire 5870 Vapor X @ £399.99 inc VAT ***

cant believe i got my 5870 for 299 on day of release. I think its the first time i bought some tech and its actually gone up in price since day of release lol :)

i too got mine for £298 on launch day and that was cheaper than any other store stock or not.

This is a business and were in a recession why should the company send someone a more expensive superior card because they have been waiting 1 month for a lesser card.

We all know about manufacturing problems with TSMC and that Dell bought a lot of the stock yet to those like buscuitboy thats OCUKs fault. They will send you the card you ordered when they can get it no one has stock and OCUK manage to get what stock they can before others so i dont see the point in moaning about your consumer rights.

My only gripe with the OCUK process is that they take your money even if they dont have something in stock. Other places do not take your money till your item ships.

For that reason i only ever order stuff listed as in stock from OCUK.

If peter can sell 20 apples at 10 pence each in 1 hour, then peter raise the price to 1pound and still sells the apples in 1 hour it makes sense to sell them at 1 pound.

nope, it makes sense to keep increasing the price until they take a bit longer to sell 1 hour is not a long time

Again, missing my point, I said that OCUK could offer the card to the people waiting at a reasonable price, not the same price as the referance card. (ie, reduce their massive margin on the card in order to fulfill the longest waiting backorders whether it be me or someone else!) Comprende??

how do you know what their margin is on the card ?

i am sure they are also having to pay a high premium for them as well.

I have seen this card on pre-order elsewhere considerably cheaper and presumably they are still making a healthy profit. Bottom line, there is sufficient competition for Ocuk and the customer has a choice to make. Today I bought a new monitor, Ocuk had it in stock but it was £46 cheaper elsewhere so I didn't buy it here much as I would have liked to. Consumer choice, simple.:(

pre-order is a million miles away from In-Stock ;)

Got mine this morning, sure I paid over the odds (£400) but i finished my upgrade and i don't have to keep checking stock and prices.. JD

I purchased mine two days after release.
I was in two minds whether to hold on a bit longer then buy it but I'm really glad that I did otherwise I would be in the endless que now.

There probably isnt a true 'enthusiast' on here that hasnt at some point overpaid for a piece of hardware. Its just the nature of the game.

...which is fine in a market in which you have that choice. When no-one else has the item in stock, then OcUK is the only market and they should be expected to sell the item for the price the market will bear. To put it simplistically, if the card is worth more to me than it is to you, the fact that I am willing to pay more will count and I'll get it before you. The trade off is I get the newer technology at an earlier stage, the extra I pay is effectively depreciated over the time until the product is more widely available.

On a separate point, not sure if we're misinterpreting what Fatboy said anyway. He may have been making the reverse point to what posters have assumed - i.e. if any other etailers could actually get the stock, they too might be charging a premium...

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that when I 'm looking to buy some Pc hardware the first place I look is here, Ocuk and see if they have stock and get a price. Then I look elsewhere, to compare prices and then I decide which retailor to purchase from, taking several factors into account. I show no loyalty to any particular retailor and over the last few years have probably purchased from most of the biggies. I have recently been thinking of my next graphics card upgrade and naturally was looking at the Ati 5870\5850\5770 cards. When released the Ati rrp for each of the above cards, I thought, were very reasonable and after the initial hype and price gouging thought I would be able to pick up one of these cards at a good price. I wont go into the why's and wherefors of the short supplies of these cards which unfortunately has led to further price gouging and the ridiculous price of the 5850 rrp £180 selling at one point for £260 on Ocuk. Whilst stock with other retailors were infrequent they could still be had and usually quite a bit cheaper than Ocuk.

My point is I don't think Ocuk, particularly, and one or two other retailors have handled the pricing of the 5970\5870\5850 fairly at all and have been maximising profit at the expense of loyal (remember I am not one) customers.
Remember many loyal Ocuk customers must have been looking forward to buying one of these cards at the rrp release price thinking they can finally get a performance card for a decent price. Many have been denied that right to purchase at rrp and for that Ocuk and the other retailors should hang their heads in shame. There are a couple of retailors who are advertising 5850's at rrp and are awaiting stock.

Because of the aforementioned situation I decided not to purchase a new graphics card and bought a nice new 1080p monitor(not from Ocuk sadly)which thankfully continue to be cheap to buy. I know people will defend retailors and there right to make profit and I understand that but I can't help but think that Ocuk and others missed an opportunity here to do the right thing by there loyal customers and that it may, in the long term, come back and bite them on the ass.:(

Oh and if my interpretation of what Fatboy said was wrong then I apologise unreservedly to him but stand by what I've said above.

I'm no flag bearer for OCuk here, but I can advertise 5850's at £150 each if I dont actually have any in stock.

I would never assume that an etailor would actually honour a price advertised on an out of stock item. Its only 'an invitation to buy' after all and they can easily ring up when it gets in stock and say its now £30 more expensive, knowing that most people would just go ahead anyway because they are fed up of waiting...

Personally, when shopping online, I only believe in what I can see and touch (so to speak) and generally never order from retailers who are out of stock or dont have a live stock system.

I think you hit the nail on the head to be honest. I've been watching with interest from the sidelines. I've been mulling a GPU upgrade, but it's not really essential- I game at 1280x1024, and in XP, and my 8800GTX does everything I need. I quite liked the look of eyefinity, and as I have three monitors was considering a jump.

In my case I've always been a loyal OCUK customer. I'd only buy something elsewhere if OCUK didn't supply it. If ocuk had no stock I'd buy from them anyway and wait. The extra few quid is worth the customer service I've traditionally received. However the pricing of these cards smacks as slightly... I dunno.... cynical, and not something I'd have expected from ocuk. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the policy at all, it's basic retail economics at work. But for me something seems to have changed, and I'll not be using ocuk exclusively from now on.

Swings and roundabouts though, in today's climate the bottom line is everything, and ocuk are ensuring theirs remains healthy.
