Think my car is running very rich!

I know there is a genuine question here by the op, but seriously, it's a sports model of a car, you don't seriously even care about mpg do you ? If I get over 200 mmiles from 40 litres in the s2k I'm either sat constantly on motorways or the fuel pixies are topping up the car constantly ... And that's from a 2.0 n/a car

Of course he should worry about MPG. Just because he has a sporty Focus, doesn't mean he can suddenly disregard MPG. If my car suddenly started getting 10mpg i'd be worried!

I can get at least 220miles from 40 litres and that's with cold start journeys, with 35% town driving, 65% backroad driving, in a much heavier car than yours and with a 3.0 n/a.

Thats more than 30mpg which is pretty good going in a car like yours and suggests your balance of 'cold short' journeys is not quite as heavy as you might think.

My car weighs 50-60k more than yours and I am currently on 19.2mpg. At the moment I am doing exclusively 4-5 mile trips from cold in town.

Edited after more precise calculations ;)

Even so, it's not nearly as bad on fuel as i thought it would be. But it could be because every morning i am stuck behind someone doing 40mph and with no overtaking points on my route to work, i just sit back, take it easy and turn up the stereo.

This is my 2.2 prelude over the last few tanks. Varying between 340-350 miles to a tank
Distance covered:- 345 miles
Litres of fuel used :- 50 litres @ cost 110 pence per litre
Your fuel consumption
(31.37MPG) ( Km per litre)( litre per 100Km)
Averaging 15.94 pence per mile

Oh, and 250miles from 40 gallons is around 28mpg
220 from 40 is exactly 25mpg

Sounds about right - my Legnum VR4 does sub 20mpg around town.

Oh, and don't trust the fuel gauge on any car, they're never particularly accurate!

I'd marry the car if i got 350 miles to a tank! as it stands i get approx 200-220 at the moment.

I honestly dont mind that I get poor MPG but it just irritates me that people with the same car get much better milage. Specially as I rarely go above 2.5k rpm so the turbo never really gets time to spool up.

Might try a different brand of fuel, see if that makes a difference as ive used sainsbury's super unleaded since getting the car.

I can get 350 miles with some careful driving, shame it costs me £70 to fill it :p

I think you need to give it a few hours of right foot, to clean it out a bit :D

Perhaps you are just not driving it as well as other people? The way you drive does not have to be scary to use up a lot of fuel.

Do you coast out of gear much (wastes fuel), do you engine brake up to lights, anticipate lights changing/junctions to minimise braking?

I was in a car with a friend the other day, and was noticing that I was feeling a bit ill, i then saw that she was continually slowing down and speeding up. She jabbing the accellerator with her foot like a switch. I asked her what milage she was getting, and it was appauling for the car (Diesel turbo citroen).
I informed her about the cruise control she had never used. Since teaching her how to use it, and a few other pointers she says she is getting 20-30% extra out of each tank. Big savings, as she is a technical sales rep, and drives all day most days!

Urban driving really does kill fuel economy and then theres the fact it's a turbo so on the rare-ish occasions you do open her up it'll drink like there's no tomorrow. factor in short journeys where it's barely warmed up and the figures you are quoting don't suggest anything is majorly 'wrong' but I can see why you'd be miffed if you are hearing about others with the same car doing noticeably better.

As for all this 'you own a performance car and you're worried about mpg' nonsense...I don't care what you drive unless you have a fuel card or are loaded the vast majority of people want as many miles between fill ups as possible that's just...normal!

This is also true...my remapped 1.8t can do mid 30's on my usual 30 mile commute but it's not hard to get below 30 when the roads are quiet and the right foot is getting even slightly enthusiastic(accelerating AND braking) It's quite sad but when I'm on an economy drive I usually have the trip on instant mpg to see what effect my driving style is having and it can be quite educational!

When I first got the car I did make sure I got all the crazyness out of my system, so booted around for ages with my right foot welded to the floor. Managed to get single figures for the MPG!

As I use it for commuting to and from work (7.1 miles each way, 3 miles town, 4 miles A road) I try and keep it as sensible as possible to cut fuel costs during the week, so I can enjoy it at the weekend.

200-220 doesnt sound unreasonable, Infact im sure I did 140 last week before the light came on, Which means the car still has about 50 miles left in it. Try Tesco's 99 ron super, good stuff imo.

Im hitting 225-250 outta my ST. Not shocked really with the short drive I do to work. I get a lot more when going on longer m-way journeys so nowt to worry about!!!

Gotta reset the memory as its been awhile and always seems to show a slight improvement!
