Guys,

I have a Western Digital MyBook, I use it mainly for storage over the network but want to copy some large data over to it. Doing it via the network will take forever so want to connect it to my laptop via USB.

This is the back of the hdd:

I have a male to male USB cable, once plugged in the laptop doesn't recognise the hdd.

What kind of USB cable do I need?

Thanks

You should have got the cable with it.

USB will transfer about 25mb/sec your network should be at least double that speed so both ways should take just as long. If transfer works over the network then just do it that way.

That's a My Book World isn't it?

...IIRC the manual reads that the USB port is to support expansion to another USB HDD only and isn't for transferring files.

Quickest way of getting files onto it will be via a gigabit ethernet network, if you're wireless (which is why I suspect it's so slow) you'll just have to wait. I have one plugged into an Apple extreme 'n' base station and transferring files from my MBP to it using 'n' is actually somewhat quicker than a wired 100MBps network, should imagine Gigabit would be better still though.

I plugged the external hdd into my laptop via lan. To transfer 80gb of data will take over a day, lol. Not sure what the best way to go about this is!

Direct ethernet connection to the WD? I've not tried it with mine. Alternatively make sure both it and your PC are plugged into a gigabit swtich/router. That'll be as quick as it gets I'm afraid.
