Question/request for all you folk with trip computers

I find it quite amazing that small engined cars get such poor economy.

Just can't see the point in tiny engined cars with this sort of economy, the Mini One I have at the moment is on 29mpg. Great, its a 1.4 ffs

I know what you mean. It's not too bad though, although apparently worse than a Cooper. It uses an oldish, tuned Toyota sourced engine AFAIK which probably doesn't help matters! Handles like a flaming go-kart though, brilliant fun!

I think the way the Swift is geared to about 4k RPM @ 80mph certainly doesn't help economy, as that's where it spends a large proportion of it's life.

Why have you got a Mini One?

It's gone now, BMW were just sorting a few bits I was unhappy with from some recent work.

I reset the MPG thingy on the Mini and drove it nicely, from cold, 5 miles to drop it off and get my car.

30.1mpg.

My car would do about 22mpg on the same run.

I've not really fiddled about looking at the various values, but I know there's one for the current trip.

Generally it's somewhere in the region of 45-53MPG depending on how heavy my foot feels.

Most of the time I get just about bang on 50MPG, that's with a 100 mile mostly dual carriageway commute.

As for the manufacturers figures...

Imperial Urban (cold) - 43.5
Imperial Extra Urban - 68.9
Imperial Combined - 56.5

Oops.

Combined mpg for mine is meant to be 48mpg - I haven't reset mine in months and my normal driving is a pretty convincing impression of a combined cycle, it's currently reading 42mpg. I think one of the front brakes is binding a bit so not too bad I reckon

My religously kept fuel log for my Integra says 29.98 is my average mpg, that's is from 8248 miles.

The majority of it is from driving to work, if I only include the motorway runs, then it's more like 31.5

Honda say it should get around 32.

The main culprit is vtec, you can practically see the fuel needle dropping when you're giving it some beans :D

When I had my 1.8 Vectra, I could get around 45 mpg from very nice driving, changing gear before 2500rpm etc

My LMPG sat at 68.8 over 140k, was 66.6 when I bought it. A bit shy of manufacturers combined of 83 MPG but that test isnt from cold engines etc. My ownership MPG is around 74.

Probably be better if I was still running OEM tyres.

3.5l V6 on the 350Z on motorway trips if i stick around 75 i'll get about 34mpg however driving around town im in the low 20's.

You sure its lifetime? Most of the ones that claim they are 'life' actually reset every 2k or so.

Yeah 100%. Its only shows up next to the Odometer and is consistant. Even trip A and B max at 2000miles but when the roll over they keep a culmative track of the MPG.

I never get below 70mpg tanks.

I cant help but be intruiged by your car even though on paper I think it sucks.

this is bad :(

I drive like my pants on fire but it really ingrigues me. Much to the point of "Can I afford one" thoughts. Maybe next time.

Filled up the MX5 last night. I had done 310km (192.6 miles) and filled up with 38 litres (it's a 48L tank aparently) which makes 23.04 MPG according to the spreadsheet I've just set up. Mazda claim 31MPG combined, but with my heavy foot and a fuelish smell from the exhaust I'd say I might need to look into one of those. Still, no worse than the CTR but was expecting better.

you have to push harder to get any movement out of it. I mean i get better MPG out of my 2litre than i did with my 1.25.... but then i rarely full throttle in the 2litre, where as the 1.25 was "flat out" everywhere.

Im currently sitting at 37mpg.

when i had my 99 Volvo S80 2.9SE the trip computer averaged 22mpg. Got 35mpg on a run to glasgow and back once.

2.3 V5 claims it's about 32 on a motorway run but only about 28 round town........

actual figure is about 22 but that's cos it's running on LPG

Audi A6 3.0TDI. Its got 2 MPG settings, one is lifetime, the other is some kind of weighted avg I guess. It doesnt reset every trip, but is kinda like 50-100 miles or something. Its also got instantaneous.

I get about 30mpg to work and back (15mls each way); and used to get about 34mpg when I lived in a flatter area. It gets about 42-45 on a motorway run.

What the hell were you doing to it? Me and Pete have a 2009 Mini One at the moment over in Ireland and after resetting the trip computer, it's averaging about 42mpg and that isn't driving it like a granny! I was amazed at how economical it is.

5 miles it probably only just got the oil warm, 30mpg is good for such a short journey.
