Question/request for all you folk with trip computers

Ford think I should get 51.6 mpg from my Focus 2.0 TDCI. I reset the trip when I bought it 3 years ago, and 52,000 miles or so later, it is on 50.5 mpg.

It used to be around 55 mpg, but since Bluefin breathed on the ecu, it has fallen.

Once more in English?

For equivilant acceleration:
Big engines can run the correct fuel mixture for small throttle openings.
Small engines need full throttle and will run richer.

The higher revs of smaller engines at motorways speeds also means more internal engine friction.

I can't add to post as I don't have a trip computer. They often lie anyway.

How many people have checked that their trip computer is accurate I have worked mine out to be around 10% optimistic :o.
Thats on a Mondeo TDDI 2.0

Anyone else know how accurate or not their trip computer is?

Mine is bang on...well to the nearest 10th of a MPG over a full tank.

Mines not even remotely close to the manufacturers figures.

Manufacturer's Figures for Focus ST

Urban Fuel
20.5 mpg

Extra Urban
41.5 mpg

Combined
30.4 mpg

Actual Figures that I get, if I drove like i stole it I could understand the low figures.

Urban Fuel
17 mpg

Extra Urban
29 mpg

yeh my friends is the same, hes upto 18mpg now, never been above 20mpg

SEAT states 47 combined, over the 2000 miles i've had it i've been getting 35mpg :D I do have a heavy foot though.

7 miles trip to work this morning however got me 45mpg.

The manufacturers figures are based off the NEDC emissions test, which also dictates the CO2 classification.

It is in their interests to reduce the numbers here for the lowest possible CO2. These 'optimisations' don't neccessarily translate into improvements in the real world though.

I guess the manufacturer numbers are obtained in a lab without wind, aircon off, radio off, lights off and tyre pressures correct.

That might explain the difference between what Ford says and what you actually get?

Nope, ford just lied about the ST fuel economy. Its near on impossible to get even close to those figures no matter how you drive.

It is a very thirsty car, even though performance is great it does drink a lot when compaired to its competition, but damn does it put a smile on your face.

The two tests have an average speed of 19mph and 37mph.

I guess thats what you dont do every day so why would expect that mpg every day.

70mph is attained for 4 SECONDS on the test. With 0-44 taking 20 seconds.
