steam account stolen help :(

+ another 1.

Ive had my steam account since the day they released it and never knew about email verification. Is this a new feature?

Im all verified up now though :)

thankyou for opening my eyes and making me verify :)

also, some guy invited me to a chat session and it mentioned the ocuk steam group (well had little picture) and it was a bot/whatever with a link to a dodgey steam.tk store.

Be carefull people.

I vaguely remember someone sending me the link for that Nvidia give-away scam or whatever it was. I googled it instantly to check to see if it was dodgy. Wouldn't of entered anything either way, it just looked too suspicious.

Its like those msn links you sometimes get from contacts along the lines of 'Omg is this you *link* i didn't know you'd do that". Who the hell falls for that crap.

my only advice is why use a complicated password - I find that using a pass phrase is more secure, and easier to remember (imo ;))

It was introduced at end of August. They even made a video :

Those comments are just dumb.

Random strong passwords are great but you'd never remember it yeah. Easier way to make a strong password is to just use a word or phrase and replace certain letters or at a certain point use numbers or punctuations. But yeah, at the end of the day i'd say its very rare an account is broken into by force as oppose to you stupidly entering account data where you shouldn't.

Good luck getting it back OP.

Although, I have to ask, how come none of you have seen the verification thing before?

Every time I log in I get prompted and even if I just stay logged in I still get popups about it every fortnight or so - even though I've been verified for a while now.

Glad I came into this thread, never knew about the verification option. Just done it now.

Never had a pop up in steam telling me about verification. The only popups i've had are for Hardware surveys.

"Strong" complex passwords are usually a waste of time anyhow - many systems just store a hash of the password - and often its based only on a limited number of characters i.e. 8 or 13, etc. if someone manages to get your password via packet sniff or a keylogger, etc. it makes no odds anyhow and brute force again it doesn't really make any odds aslong as its more secure than a single dictionary word.

I never been prompted or had a pop up about verification....Only pop ups i get are steam deals and the steam survey..

I just did the verification and I was a bit surprised by the message about 'if you verify then only your email address can reset your password or secret question'. What? So beforehand they would just let any old random email address do it? Awesome, good security work there

I'm amazed this is a recent 'feature', I kinda assumed this sort of thing was a pretty standard security measure, you just don't let random email addresses that are different to the registered one change account details surely?

what you thought steam was actually good?

As many have said before, cheers for mentioning the Email Verification thing, just done it now myself, just as I'm starting to build up a small steam collection.
And as above, I've not once had any popup telling me about the verification options, pretty poor for Valve that.

Thanks for the heads up on the verifying thing, had Steam years and never knew about it, it's done now though. GL to the OP in getting this resolved.

edit: I never got any pop-ups or notification from Steam that it existed or needed doing either.

well i have just been contacted by valve and everything has just been reset, changed and i have verified my email with steam so all should be ok from now on.:)

It was not that easy. Until this August, if someone got your steam login and password, then he was able to change anything, including the email address.

Now to change anything in Steam settings (including your password or change of email address) you need to verify every change through email you get to your email address.

So this change made it nearly impossible to steal your account unless the bad guy got access to your inbox as well.

you used to be able to change your email address if you had your steam pw/name + secret question answer.

ie if you forgot your email PW you could change it which is useful for those who are a bit forgetful.

However due to the sheer number of abject retards that give their passwords out to fishing scams they had to change this.

you guys should really start reading the "steam fixes change logs" it was on there over a year ago or summit.

Verified mine when it first came out.
