Would this be a decent gaming pc?

would the Asus motherboard i suggested for the AMD set up support crossfire (if i went down that route instead of wait for more stock of 58xx series)

Probably the 5770s in crossfire by a small margin, which would shrink/disappear if you overclocked the 5850. If you look to the future, it's going to be much easier to upgrade if you go for the 5850, which would be what I'd do.

im still not quite sure about the 965 black or the i5 750, but i still have afew months to come to a decision :P

In that case i'd leave it nearer the time you want to buy before spec'ing specific parts (no harm in keeping your eye on the developing tech though). There should be a few new products and price changes by that time so you'll probably be looking at a different spec :) Hopefully the high end gpu situation will be sorted out by then as well.

Also AM3 would be a better choice as sk 1156 would be left out of the loop in a year's time.So if you go with AM3 you will have a more future proof system.Anyway I've put something together just as an idea. And the xfire setup won't be bottlenecked by the CPU as you should be able to oc it to 3.6 or higher easy with the suggested cooler.

Thanks again for all the help guys :). btw i never really introduced myself, so yeah hi... (not much of an introduction (if it can be classed as an introduction at all for that matter) but oh well :P)

The 2x 5770 option might give higher performance, but it won't in all scenarios - the scaling you get from the two cards will vary with games and drivers. (Sometimes it's negative!).
The 5850 gives you as much power as you need for any game now, reliably, and gives the option of adding another later on when you need it, when they are much cheaper.

That was my reasoning with my current machine, anyway.

If you're waiting until feb before getting this than the only thing I can recommend is reading up on benchmarks of Xfire 5770 vs 5850. Hopefully by the new year prices will drop and an i7 build might even be a possibility. But if you don't go i7, in my eyes the i5 would be a better choice than the 965 (mainly because of the chipset, the 1156 is likely to last for a fair few years more than AM3 I would expect).
Just pay close attention to the supply of the new 58xx's and you might be able to grab a bargain after or perhaps before the new year ;)

Btw, i forgot to say, the £850 -ish maximum has to include the o/s so really the acutal computer has to only come to about £750 (i can go like £30 or so over but preferably not.)

For all of the specs posted add around 70 for the OS. Ive seen the performance of both and i think the I5 is better although marginally. I like AMD but at the moment intell are leading the way.

i know this is a software question, but because the price would effect the build price, which o/s would be better for gaming out of vista 64 bit or win 7 64 bit?
