Hi,

Looking to upgrade my HTPC HDD for a quicker and quieter one. Currently have the Seagate 7200.10 320gb.

I would only need 500gb max, as I have a file server. So what would be the quietest ?

Looking at the Seagate 7200.12 / Samsung F3's and the Western Digital Green's at the moment,

Thanks.

If speed ain't too important you could always go down the 2.5" laptop drive route and get a scorpio blue at 5400rpm. Depends how quiet you want to go before performance gets to be an issue.

Well I have the WD caviar green & black in a shuttle and can't say that is loud in the slightest. According to the website both have the same rated decibel level.

I'm currently using a 320gb WD scorpio black in my main PC. 7200rmp but 2.5" so nice and quiet compared to bigger drives - which was why I bought it,

Sadly I'm not big on HDD benchies but It doesn't "feel" slower than my old Sammy F1 1TB in desktop usage.

I can post a HD tune screenshot if it'll be of use to you though.

You can't go wrong with the WD drives.
If you don't mind noise so much and want to lean more towards performance, then go with the WD Caviar Black. If you want the quitest possible and worry less about performance, then the WD Caviar Green. If you prefer to be somewhere in between, then go with the WD Blue.
