What i find fascinating is the more we learn the more the bible is shown to be historically accurate. That these events did happen, although exaggerated or confused in he Bible. Like Soddom was hit by rain of fire. but from an asteroid rather than Gods handy work. That massive floods did happen at the right time periods.

An event that happened back then such as an asteroid, eclipse, earthquake etc will all cause legends and stories to spring up - just because the timeframes are vaguely accurate doesn't in itself give the story surrounding the event and basis in fact.

The bible as we know it has been translated and edited over the centuries, the bible people read today is barely recognisable compared to older versions.

Ask your self: have you really thought about this?

A very apt question.

Yes.

Next question.

So what are your thoughts? Answer carefully, as many people spend their lives wrestling with this very idea. So much of our history and future rests on how people feel about this.

I think it's easier for someone to believe in God and have that faith than it is for an atheist to decide they don't believe, having thought about the issue.

No, there's more than one religion so someone has to be making it up.
You could say well each religion is depicting one god in their own image but some have multiple gods.

Some religions are even recently made in some of our life times.

So no, I believe in a spiritual life but not following a "god".

of course it gives the storys fact as they are based on real events. I never said that it was done by God just that the more we learn the bible turns out to be historically correct on events, encryption timelines and many other things.

 how does any of hat prove or discredit Jesus/god.

But no

It doesn't need to because theres no proof of god to even disprove.

Everyone comes up with this, but it means nothing, Einstein was a religious man, so was Isaac Newton.

So was Hitler, oh wait, this means nothing.

What i find fascinating is the more we learn the more the bible is shown to be historically accurate.

Extreme cherry picking from the bible there :p

I'm an atheist. I do not believe in God, nor any higher being. Nobody can prove the existence of God, just in the same way nobody can disprove the existence of God, in exactly the same way that nobody can disprove the existence of Santa or Russell's Teapot.

I have no belief in the supernatural, or paranormal. However, I have no problem whatsoever with anybody having a different belief system to myself.

Not at all im 100% atheist .. as a child I did attend church/sunday school but this was because I couldn't make my own choices then or do what I want, now that I can I refuse to believe, so many bad things happen in the world if there was god they would have the power/control to stop it.

Ahh, but there is evidence of Jesus. My background in science causes me to dislike the word 'proof'.

Edit:

A good point. I think it's adequately explained by the concept of the fall.

Then you have as much faith as a religious person. How can you categorically say there is no God/Gods.

BTW I'm agnostic I do not believe in any of the religions, but we do not know enough about the universe to rule out a deity of any description.

IMO god is kind of a spirit that controls everything in nature, the birds singing and the weather and other things. Its what makes the world go roand bey.

Proof of a man?? NOW I'm a believer! There's a huge leap from proof of a human being... and proof of a god.

God does not fall into the scientific model, so you are using an apple corer to peel an orange.

Not at all. Look at major events and time lines.

Of course he doesn't!

How can you categorically say there is no God/Gods.

The same way I can say there's no flying tea pot, how can you say there IS a god??

You're the one taking huge leaps here... not us :p

Ask your self: have you really thought about this?

I'm not the OP either, but Yes - I've spent the last eleven weeks thinking about it actually.

I - like many around here - have a scientific background. Which, if Richard Dawkins had his way would mean there's no way I should believe. However, there's something very appealing about the whole community thing that seems to come with Christianity, and I have many times felt the need to pray for family/friends.

So, I've spent the last eleven weeks on an Alpha Course. That told me a lot, but it still didn't answer my questions. I do have a huge problem with the whole Creation story because I'm firmly in the Darwin camp, but I don't know if that is a killer blow.

So, I don't know.

I'm not taking any leap, AGNOSTIC. if you are religious or atheist you are taking a leap of faith.
A flying tea pot is a testable hypothesis and can be checked. We know what a teapot looks like, we know it's weight. We can check for mavity, visual images, radar and everything else.
