Impreza Classic Owners Past and Present Check In.

I think the main thing will always be the £400 a year to tax which is a lot, and most people wont think ah but its my hobby etc but just that a lot of money and what does a car that only cost £200 a year not give you (esp if you dont drive) over the £400 option.

They're not crap at all. Remind us again what you drive....

You know perfectly well already, and you also know how irrelevant it is. You should also know that a 200hp 4wd ain't gonna be a rocket ship, and that you'll get embarrassed by quite a few hot hatches in one nowadays. Maybe it isn't crap as such, but compared with an STi it is.

Nah you're wrong. Ok a really early Uk turbo is not brilliant from 70+mph but off the mark and up to 60 you show me many hatches that can do 0-60 in less than 6? The early Uk are 208bhp and light as a fag paper and therefore they are not as slow as you're trying to make out. As I say after 70-80 then yes luxobarges and even (god forbid) some decent Tds will be right with you but the standard Uk Impreza is not as tardy as you're making out.

Factor in a remap of death and with 230-240bhp they are solid perfomers even by todays standards :D

Plus...whilst 4wd does add drag etc its truly great for getting the most out of the car on Uk roads.

I would heartily reccommend something like an Accord Type R.

You'll have easily enough performance for any condition in this country and excellent reliability.

I've just gone from turbo nutter territory (rx7 and a 300 bhp subaru legacy gt) to a slightly more sensible DC2 Integra Type R, but was very close to getting an Accord Type R for the sensibility factor and room.

Yeah maybe so, but you are totally missing the point, the sti is a total step up in terms of performance. You know as soon as you put the thing in gear it's sharper, racier, and better than a UK. Heck you can see it before you've even sat in it thanks to the nicer seats with red garnish.

Not denying that...had both and got the Sti after realising that I could throw money at a Uk til the cows came home or bite the bullet and just get the car I wanted BUT it comes at a price and brings reliability worries that you probably wouldn't have with a UK. Namely...insurance (always higher and considerably so), uncertain history, re-mapping or diet of 99 Ron fuel for life...

The Sti was the car for me but you have to accept that they are higher strung, less civilised, thirstier, more expensive to keep and an import at this age...doesn't sound like what he wants/needs to me?

Yes I agree about the car, but no so much about what he wants. I think what he really wants is a car that isn't slower than his VXR. I think if he bought a UK he'd end up chasing after sti performance and spending money hand over fist on tuning parts until his wife divorces him ;)
The sensible option here is to buy a mundane Mondeo, but the guy who buys a Vectra VXR probably isn't that kind of sensible guy.

damn you and damn you some more :D

Ok so yes there is

but they're going to cost more to run that my VXR and my 2k is going to disappear in minutes isnt it ?

To be fair, the bugeye prodrive is overpriced IMO.

A lad sold a perfectly reasonable looking black bugeye STI on SNet for £5K. It was a Malta import but that doesn't really matter these days.

It was a very good buy. The newage STI isn't going to be any cheaper than the Vectra and probably more so.

A cheap UK turbo with good credentials would a fine choice.

Clarkey - your talking cobblers mate. An STI and a UK turbo aren't that far away from each other and I'd wager most on here are not that handy behind the wheel that they could honestly tell the difference feel the UK car was holding them back in the "real world"

For instance, I drove a V4 STI type R and was horrified to find it wasn't much quicker than my UK Turbo. I drove a P1 which did feel quicker than both of those and my RA really did make my heart thump so was a decently quick car. The RA had Ohlins suspension and an ALK so felt much different to my UK car but I would actually prefer a UK car now (or a P1)

Lol it's scary how well you seen to know me !?

Lol so what do I buy ?

Methinks you are in a bit of an impossible predicament...you want it all performance-wise but you can't afford for things to go wrong and cost you money. That's a tall order buddy!

I'm as much of a petrolhead as the next guy but sometimes you have to accept that your circumstances just don't tally with what you want car-wise. I had to sell my v3 Sti Impreza for this reason when my son came along. It really did my head in at the time and I still hanker after another Impreza but my import Sti with rock hard suspension, various mods = 1k insurance at 30+ yrs, drinking problem (the car!), etc etc just didn't add up to the family car 'we' needed. I'm not bitter :p

deep down i know this middle ground is an ST220

full leather, cruise, climate, heated seats, etc.. and a 220bhp V6. If i was sensible like fox id have had the ST220 first time round.

I think an st220 sounds a good option, and if you can find a good condition st200 consider that also. The latter if looked after should retain it's value better, I'd imagine 3k could get one and if it's still running I doubt it would drop far below 2k.
