PS3 firmware 3.15 out next week

awesome update im going to wait now as i have a old jap ps3 and i just got a ps3 slim so the data back up will be a big help.

I emailed UBISoft about the locked saved games files as I have a PS3 (launch day console) and bought a slim 2 months ago for the bedroom (mostly for BD's and the odd game in bed) wanted to copy my Assassins Creed 2 saved game over to pen drive and slap it on the slim in the bedroom but couldn't as it was locked. Their reply was that many people sell saved game files on the bay and other places... Hence that's why they have locked saved game files.

Seems strange to me as game companies don't own the saved game files, it's the player that owns them as they have done all the work and anyone who buys saved game file has to seriously desperate to buy them just for 100% and trophies/achievements.

I am confused about this protected game saves crap. About 20-30 games are protected. Is that to say every single other PS3 game can have game saves shared for cheating on trophies? I thought they were linked to your PSN profile etc? How come we don't hear more about people trading game saves and cheating for trophies, if only a handful of games have protection against it?

It also seems that protected files can be moved using the transfer just not copied, so the original PS3 will loose the save game.

You can't, with the new LAN cable transfer utility. It is clarified in the comments section loads of times here: http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2009/12/08/ps3-system-software-update-3-15/

AFAIK using a game save will stop you getting trophies but obvusly you can get certain parts or levels unlocked.
Hopefully in time they will release a patch to unlock saves like Resident Evil 5

Aren't trophies disabled when you transfer a save game. They're on Uncharted 2 anyway.

I don't know, that was my question, if they are, and Uncharted 2 is not a copy protected game iirc, why are certain games copy protected?

All makes sense now. So you could transfer the save to unlock bits of the game you haven't (but trophies will always be locked to the PSN profile). Still confused why about 20-30 games publishers deem this a problem, and the vast majority do not.

Just read this thread, http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18088410 sounds like this guy is trying to get someone's game save!

That's what I've experience so far. On Uncharted 2 I could continue where I left off etc. but just had a message saying trophies are disabled. Maybe with some games there are still work arounds for things. Res 5 probably has loads of weaponary and item exploits. KZ2 and RES5 probably wouldn't work online from a transferred save game and they're heavily mulitplayer based.

I used someones save once with Skate as I couldn't be bothered to unlock everything after a while but that does not have trophies, but as Nanoman says you lose the ability to earn trophies when using another save.

I experienced the annoyance when my PS3 got YLOD and had to start RE5 from the start again as I could not backup my save to my external drive.

This post was recently made by a 'Technical Support Advisor' in regards to the controller syncing issue on the EU forums,

"Hi Everyone,

Thanks for your patience on this one. I have been advised that this issue has been fixed with the

launch of the new firmware tomorrow.

NF"

I guess that's about as an official of an acknowledgement as we're going to get, strange as to why they didn't mention the fix in the blog post.

So am I right in thinking this backup feature will include locked game saves?

would have been handy at launch tbh. Already had to complete SF4 and Killzone 2 again since I got my slim
100% agree
I wonder if they'll fix Uncharted for everyone finally...
I never had any issues with this and as you know I only recently completed it...

PS3 Data Transfer Utility

This feature enables you to easily transfer all of your saved data from one PS3 to another. So if you decide to get a new PS3 you can make sure you don’t loose any of your existing content. Content such as games, game save data, and videos downloaded from PlayStation Network can be transferred to the new PS3 system and deleted from the current PS3. Other content, including personal media files (photos, music, videos), can be copied onto the new PS3 and remain on the current PS3 system.

 Just in time

Copy-protected game saves won't be transferred using the transfer utility.

Are you sure about that.......

Ah fair enough, there are about a dozen replies on the PS Blog by one of the Sony guys saying it wouldn't, so not sure where they got their info from!

Edit: Oh, and thanks for the heads-up Tank, got mine downloading it now (may as well whilst electricity is cheap!).

I know I've been reading them also and thought the same as you tbh, until that was when someone just recently posted a link to the above pic on the blog :p, at least it actually makes the transfer utility useful for new slim users migrating from a old system.

Shot in the dark but I don't suppose I could transfer any of my PSN games to a new console?

My daughter's getting a Slim for Xmas and I would like to give her a few PSN games to get her started :)

Load your PSN account on to her system, and just re-download the games you want her to have via the Store. Each piece of content can be authenticated against 5 PS3 systems (with about 5 or 6 exceptions).

Uncharted still doesn't work. Stupid Sony.

(and no i'm not alone in this issue before anyone asks)

Have you tried what this guy has done?

Whilst you may not be alone, It does not seem to be an issue I have seen on gaming sites or other forums, so I doubt it is affecting very many people (As I recall your game gets stuck on the loading screen, but it doesn't on your parents machine that does not have the 3.xx update, hence, you think it is a firmware issue?)

Have you contacted the NaughtyDog or Sony (via their forums), to see if they can help?

I havn't tried that no, will do as soon as i'm home from work though so cheers.

I upgraded my parents to 3.xx and they were still fine, but their model is a 80gb so i still feel there's a chance it could be a firmware issue on certain hardware revisions. On my own PS3 i've actually formatted and reset to factory defaults in the hope that it would work, it didn't. As i say i'll try playing it without the patch and see what happens.
