I have a spare system q6600 8800GTX 4gb DDR2 ram with windows vista. Also in the new year i will have 50mb virgin broadband.

I fancy trying to set up a dedicated server from it, what would i need to do and pay for, would i need licence's off the game owners etc?

Also will i casue me problems when i want to play on my new computer with the other pc running all the servers?

You'd need a connection with better then average upload for starters. Most games have dedicated server software in them somewhere.

youll be fine my mate ran his at home for few yrs and that had 32 people on 24/7 fpr nearly two yrs ;) that was a lot lower than your 50mb

hmmm i wonder if it will run a CSS 100tick 20 server, 11man match server css 100tick, 8slot l4d and eventually a 32 slot BFBC2 server? what u think am i asking to much haha?

You could easily run those. No point having a GFX card in it though. Sell it and get Windows Server 2003 and some more RAM. Another thing to look at is if you have a bandwidth cap. My server (40-slot CS:S and couple of L4D2 servers) has used almost 1000GB this month so far (2 weeks).

Ok will do that sounds good! is there a way to give access to fellow admin thro some sort of control panel or will i have to run all the server config files?

Admin control to the server you mean? Or the game server? There are plugins you can use to give admin on game servers and you can give server control through Remote Desktop.

Surely for someone who intends to be playing games at the same time, not necessarily on the home server I imagine, running one 100 tick 10 man CSS server is going to be already too much for a 50mb virgin line?

The upload on a 50mb line is no different from their other packages.

But the point is that home hosted servers suck. You don't have the direct links (or the bandwidth - if you think you're going to be able to run all those servers with decent pings, you're wrong) to other ISPs that datacentres have. If you want to host a server so badly why not just rent one? They're cheap as chips nowadays!

Oh is it? this is what i'm trying to work out, if its not worth me doing it then i wont.

Do you need to be very technically minded to set one up?

No the point i'm trying to make is i have a spare PC which is decent spec, very good internet connection, so was simply asking a question, we can easily afford servers hence us having a few. Just asking a question

I think it would struggle with FPS style games etc due to it being a home connection in which you would like to use yourself. But maybe some form of MMO etc?

Static IP address is usually an idea, although not vital. VM is dynamic is it not ?

with regard what will it run, just try it when you get your VM connected the server files don't cost you anything and if it bombs badly on your connection then the worse that's happened is you've learned something.

if your running source engine stuff then start here

Not much different at any rate. Im on 50mb Virgin myself, and my upload is still completely pants. Games servers are very easy to set up though, you dont have to be very technical minded at all.

One option you could look at, if you're up for learning a bit and making use of the old computer is setting up a home server. Centralise all your files, have torrents or whatever running 24/7 with a web interface you can access anywhere, stream media to other pc's/tv/etc, and all sorts of other advantages. Its a good learning experience setting it up, and I had some good fun doing it.. Can always run a dedicated game server on it every now and then for a laugh as well.

Ran a TF2 dedi off at box at work 10/10mb leased line, pings were fine, 30-60, capped it at 18 people and it played fine, I put ventrilo on it as well, was great.

You won't be able to run anywhere near that amount of servers. Is it 1.5mbit or 2.5mbit upload on VM 50mbit? I forget... Either way, that's nowhere near the 100mbit-1gbit that proper hosted servers have.

It's not all bad though...You could probably run a single 16slot (not 100tick) server without any problems and with only minimal lag for people. Be prepared for people to moan at you about you having an ultra low ping though :)
