could smoking next to your pc be detremental to it's components

weird question i know but i've done work in houses where people smoked for as few years and there thick yellow build-up on glass and all sorts of stuff wonder if this could impact a pc at any point in it's life.

sorry just a random moment

Ooooh yes! (said knowingly)

Interesting thread here as proof: http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=1463&highlight=nicotine and some more here too: http://www.badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=852&page=2&pp=20&highlight=nicotine this topic also reminds me of an old graphics card I upgraded too IIRC this was an Nvidia 6600, the system refused to boot and so I enlisted the assistance of the local PC Guy on a Sunday to assist, he goes into the back of his shop pulls this old card out and shows it to me, suggests I might like it without the added Nicotine and 2" of 'fluff' stuck to it, so we struck a deal and he got to work.

Some 5 hours and multiple reboots later I suspect he was reconsidering his kind gesture to assist me on that particular day. But one last try of dunking the particular card into a sink, then sticking it in a plastic bag to help dry it out with the aid of a hair-dryer and the system booted, allowing me to continue my gaming for that day.

So in short: Yes, nicotine does have an affect on computer components as the numerous sources of proof provided will show.

I smoke beside my pc all the time, yes i have to vacum a wee bit more, but the main thing is it kinda leaves my monitor a wee bit dirtier, Gotta try and stop as im worried about ruining the screen, it cost almost £450.00 and i dont fancy shelling out for a replacement due to a ruined screen, but im gonna try and stop smoking as it costs to much.

not bothered about your health lol but are concerned with the PC screen and costs of fags.

I like you :)

I smoke next to mine all the time, just means us smokers clean it abit more then others, but ahwell most of us know that anyways.

Those above pics look like that person never cleaned it at all, non of my pcs have ever looked anywhere near that bad, i make an effort once a month to clean all my electronics in my room, from comp, to monitor to lcd tv.

Iv even seen non smokers pcs looking like that, its all about if they clean it or not.

The rig in those pics is extremely filthy looking, ive never had to remove a signifigant amount of crud from mine, but then its kept on the ground and i give the fans a blast with compressed air every now and again.

Apart from the fact that you'll need to clean it more often and it will be harder than really nothing can happen.

On the other side I've read an article not long ago of apple technicians voiding the warranty and refused to fix it because they said the dust left from cigarettes inside was hazardous for their health.

So, be aware your PC parts might loose warranty ;-) haha.

I smoke around my PC all the time. We even smoke together!

By the time the internal components get like that pic above, it will be time for upgrading anyway so its no big deal!

There is a very simple solution; Washable Dust Filters infront of all intake/out-take fans which you wash once a month!

Dust filters over the exhaust fans? To keep the dust in? A novice point for you I fear photoshop

It keeps the dust on the filter and not on the fan. Put the filter infront of the exhaust fan rather than the rear. Then all you simply do is remove the filter, wash it, and reattach onto the fan.

Simples.

i can see the headline nowPC SUES MAN OVER PASSIVE SMOKING CLAIM

More like PC REPAIR SHOP ENGINEER SUES CUSTOMER OVER PASSIVE SMOKING CLAIM.

I've sorted out a few friends pcs and once i turn them on, the whole room smells of cigarettes and gets me chesty, so its not just what goes in, but what comes out...

Well smoking next to ya pc is good, cos it collects all the nicotene. Just undo the case and scrap the nicotene of and roll yaself a siggy :P

I've smoked next to my PC for years, i have to clean the filters every 3/4 months oppossed to 6 months, but any dusty environment would be the same.
