What is positive discrimination? What is racism?

So without "positive discrimination" how do you deal with the very obvious bias towards whites in certain areas. If all the education and encouragement to apply is not working and the bias is not changing how do you address it? Or do we just accept that ethnic minorities will be worse off due to their skin colour?

It might not be, but if everything else has been addressed and you are still getting less ethnics applying what else do you do?

let them pick whats best for themselfs without pushing them into a role just to keep there numbers up?

It's a university placement year. To get onto the course to start with you have to be amongst the best of the applicants in the country, getting straight As. Do A-level examiners discriminate by race? no.

You then have to be amongst the best in the year to apply for the placement year programme. Do university markers discriminate by race? no.

You then have to apply for placements which is very competitive, a lot of people don't get a place. Do they discriminate by race? Apparently so.

What's the difference between saying "no whites" and saying "no blacks" again?

Positive discrimination is thinly veiled racism. Why don't we just give jobs to the best candidate or do these people think people from ethnic minorities are "special" and won't get a job without help, I think that's extremely patronising view to have if true.

I went to a football match last week and in the hospitality speeches was a black ex-player complaining about the lack of black managers in the football league. He had started an initiative to persuade clubs to actively look to hire more black managers, and one of the specific points was that clubs HAD to at least interview any black people with relevant skills.

I clapped like everyone else when he finished speaking, which was a bit hypocritical really because I was struggling with the concept of actively seeking someone just because they were from a particular ethnic minority. On the one hand he would argue that it simply levels up the playing field, because there is already bias towards whites in the recruitment world, but really how can it be fair if there is a white candidate that was better than a black candidate, but the white candidate was not selected or even considered purely because they were white.

It hasn't though. is there something like positive discrimination for council estates. that is what I liken it to. I really don't think it is skin colour. Just like council estates. You have a general lack of family, values, education and with immigrants you also have language barrier. Just like council estates there are loads that get out of it and raise to the highest paid jobs. But on average you are going to have lower % due to crime and education.

Which is discriminating by race, that is racism under any definition.

Sexuality isn't a race last time I check, neither is someone's background or religious beliefs.

Thus meaning people of other races, background, sexuality lose out....

I suppose it does. But generally white, Christian, straight people don't have the same employment issues as gay, black, or Jewish people have had in the past.

Are you just ignoring the bit which says ethnic minorities?

religious and sexuality is still discrimination.

No, not ignoring the OP. Just answering the question in his thread title.

OP asked what racism was and what positive discrimination is. Everyone knows the former, I explained the latter.

We're going round in circles if I have to explain it again. I covered that positive discrimination often includes race AS WELL AS religion, sexuality etc and yet you said all of those came under racism. They don't.

Now you've just repeated what I said. I think we have our wires crossed. I know what I'm talking about but it doesn't seem you do.

Its not racism.

Its ment to be a state counterbalance to a system that inherently favours the white majority thereby promoting a multicultural society. *back to the essay on this*

No they're not.

Positive discrimination refers to favourable treament of an individual BECAUSE of their race, background, sexuality, age etc.

Ermmm, So good old fashioned racism didn't refer to favourable treatment of whites to the detriment of the blacks etc?

If it;s a benifit to one race alone it must be a detriment to the tohers.
