After seeing it last night i agree with pretty much everyone that it had a predictable plot. Still a good film, but too long for what it was (course it is James Cameron, so you expect that).
My first 3D film too and it was pretty amazing at times. Still not perfect, like it did blur and flicker a bit when people run fast across the screen. But the amount of depth it adds is crazy. Its a weird experience, after awhile i thought, this is how all films look, but then took the glasses off and seen how flat it was. Its a new, but also familiar experience if that makes sense. Like you can see everything already in 2D, say like a hallway down in the background, but in 3D it adds a lot of depth. Reminded me of playing a computer game or something. Hard to explain, needs to be seen, but a really good first time 3D film for me.

I have no respect for Kevin Maher ever since he reviewed the movie '21', stating several times that it was about poker.
I've not seen the film yet but I heard Leona Lewis's theme song last night for the first time. Excellent job Miss Lewis.
I think I'll wait to get this on Bluray as the cinemas will be too full of young annoying brats at the moment.

But what about the 3D?
From the sounds of it, the story/plot/acting is nothing special. The only thing that makes this film special is the technology, of which the 3d imagery is integral.
Your really shooting yourself in the foot if you do that. You absolutely cannot recreate the experience at home. You can get close to the 2D version if you've got a brilliant home cinema setup but the 3D won't be achievable for some time.
Sure 3d Blurays been finalized and the players are on their way, but its sure as hell not worth it on a TV IMO. You need 100"+ cinemascope projection and a sound system to match.
They're all fine, but the story/plot is somwhat flat... And the visuals I suspect will still be stunning in 2D. Possibly in some ways even more so, as I found the 3D effect slightly blurred. Maybe 2D will give you a clearer picture...

I'd say its likely to be on until the end of Jan, and maybe through some of Feb. However, it may well be demoted firstly from digital to film screens, and also from 3d to just 2d showings.
Ofcourse this is dependant on its popularity and whether its keeping the 3D showings in the big screens that long. Regardless, you want to see this in the Number 1 screens in the cinema while you can.
Go to a late night screening in early Jan I'd say you'd be pretty safe.
Is he the 1-eyed cyclopse?
I understand that this would be a problem with anaglyph 3d, but, intuitively, I would have thought it wouldn't be a problem (beyond the lack of depth) to watch polarised/shutter 3D with only one eye.
This. It should be 24p per eye, and the refresh for just that one eye should still be 72hz.
Most 2k Cinemas will use 144hz triple flash @ 48p for 3d.

Incredible film, the computer graphics really are a step above everything else, it just looked so real and the 3D just draws you in. I'll definitely be seeing it again at some point!
To be honest, a film for me is all about physical, mental and emotional impact. How, and what does it make me feel and think while sitting there, as well as after it finishes.
I'm not one to get hung up over storyline, acting, believability, direction, and so on.
Yes some elements of this film were not the best, and other films will have done certain things far better.
However as a complete package, this is the best movie that I have yet experienced.

That's a very strong statement.
I.. might be there with you. The only comparison as an experience I can draw is the first Lord of the Rings movie. I didn't see Star Wars back in 1977, before I was born, but many critics have stated that experiencing Avatar was comparable to seeing Star Wars 30+ years ago. You could write a novel about the problems of these movies (Star Wars, Avatar) but why bother? I'm all about movie experience. I don't actively try to find flaws in a movie if I'm enjoying myself and I often end up hating movies critics love because I just can't relate to either characters, story or even visuals. What I found in Avatar was some good characters, decent but predictable plot and oh-my-god visuals in the form of Pandora. Works for me. Some of the other blockbusters of the year like Wolverine, 2012, Transformers and Terminator Salvation had neither characters, plot nor visuals. And I absolutely hated all of them. Cameron knows how to turn a blockbuster into an actually good film.
What surprised me the most were the Na'vi. I really disliked the Avatar teaser and trailer and especially those "blue night elves" but I really fell in love with their race during the movie. Not perfect obviously but those CGI characters really did grow on you during the movie. I say CGI but they could have been real people just as well.
After the movie ended, going back to real world with flat colors and surprisingly poor 3D effects (yes, real life looks worse than this movie!) was much like Jake waking up back in the military base. Do see this one in 3D. If your friend has literally one good eye, sneak into the 3D version the day before!
I really enjoyed it, if I was to watch it again though I would smoke a few more J's before going in.
