James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

Initial figures coming out of the States (the biggest market by far) are not that great :(
Midnight takings were about $3.5million whereas the latest Twilight movie reached $20+million on the same night. Avatar is expected to gross roughly $80million its first weekend, but is predicted to generate a lot more than usual in the following weeks.

Never realized Titanic was such a flop to start with!! Only made $28million it's first weekend (which is usually the biggest money earner!). I hope Avatar achieves financial success, as this clearly deserves it in my book!

Just got back from seeing this. It's the first 3D film I've seen.

It is absolutely phenomenal. The 3D truly is next generation. The 3 or so hrs flew by. After hearing that it got bad reviews I wasn't expecting anything from this, but was blown away by the effects. Awesome. :)

Didnt want to see it in 3D, dont think it enhances the film in any way and you can concentrate more on the detail in 2D. Amazing film, absolutely loved it, although the (mild) sex scene was a bit pointless.

Could it be that there are fewer 3D screens available?

EDIT: That's silly - only 33% more theatres for NM, surely not that a 10x difference for screens.

Saw it in 3D today.

I can say the 3 hours did not 'fly by'. It was a great movie, but about an hour too long if I'm being honest.

3D didn't add much, although enjoyable, it can also be quite irritating and distracting at times. Motion was jerky to perceive sometimes, and fast sections suffered. At first, it was near impossible to properly focus on things that were even slightly out of focus of the camera, but once you get engrossed this becomes less obvious.

Special effects were amazing, as we have probably come to expect nowadays.

As far as the story was concerned, it was a typical blend of sci-fi/fantasy and not as predictable as most. For the first hour that was. The clear conclusion was a long time coming.

I recommend you see it if you have any doubts, if possible in 3D, but don't lose any sleep over it if you cant.

Just got home from it. 3d was ok but not great, seemed really good in parts but at others it was like a standard film.

Well worth the watch though!

Just got back - Wow... possibly one of the best films I've seen in a good few years (when was Gladiator released?). Saw the 2d version since they weren't showing 3d this late unfortunately - probably going to watch it again though!

After the movie ended, going back to real world with flat colors and surprisingly poor 3D effects (yes, real life looks worse than this movie!) was much like Jake waking up back in the military base.

Got to agree with this!

Watched this in 3d at the IMAX in Manchester yesterday. Great film. Wasnt looking forward to it that much after seeing some of the trailers but the special effects are stunning on the big screen, the way everything moves and the facial expressions truly is amazing. considering its nearly 3 hours it did fly past, testiment to the story as well.

Went to watch it yesterday in 2D, as my nearest 3D cinema is quite far away unfortunately, and I was amazed. It wasn't the "greatest movie in modern cinema" but it was very, very good. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it excelled in most areas.

Of course there were some holes with the movie, but the as an overall package these can be overlooked. To actually create a living, breathing Pandora that felt wholly believable is a fantastic achievement and long may it continue :D

The special effects were jaw dropping and the story was better than I expected. It didnt outstay its welcome as much as Transformers or 2012 and I left the cinema feeling that it wasn't a waste of money, great film :D

A good entertaining film, very very predictable tho.
Was a bit too long for me but i'm not sure whether that was the film or the crap cinema experience i had, an old bloke on my left who kept coming out with crap jokes the whole way through and on my right a popcorn rustler and in front a 7ft talk bloke, could'nt really see the subtitles.

It's almost as if somebody set you up to make your viewing experience as bad as possible. :D

I thought that the film was brilliant and very beautiful in some of the jungle sequences. It took me about 30 minutes to really appreciate the 3D because my eyes were aching a little and the 3D effects around the human base weren't too great. Once it got to the jungle, though, it was a whole new ball game! It looked fantastic :)

This film was qualityyyy man. The effects and 3Dness was better than I have ever seen before, and the story was great.

Girlfriend didnt really enjoy it, kinda got bored half way through and because it was on for like 348394394839423 hours, its not a wise thing to take the girlfriend unlessssssss shes into these type of films. (even though, she wanted to watch it :|)

The viewing experience flew by for me... Didn't find it dragged or too long...

Kinda hoping there's an extended directors cut on the way for DVD/BluRay...

Just got back from watching the 3D version, maybe it was just me but didnt seem that great, when the action speeded up it seemed to blur along the edges?, the best 3d effect i saw was actually the advert for the fairtrade before the film.

Would have to agree with the majority here in that its certainly one of the best films I have seen in a very very long time. Deffo felt immersed in the movie more with it being 3D as well. I shall watch it again for sure...

watched it today in 3D. Decent movie 4/5. could have been a touch brighter tho. The glasses make the image a touch too dark.
