You know when policies auto renew... well...

It wasn't quite a 30k car but I know how this guy feels.

I was turning at some lights when a car went though on red and hit me, spinning me around and almost writing off the car.

Luckily I had 2 witnesses so getting them to admit liability wasn't the problem but apparently my insurance had run out less than a month previously, It has always auto renewed before that.

even though the cops at the scene didn't notice the other insurance company told them I had no insurance. Ended up in court facing possibly a ban.

However I had a letter from 1 week previous advising I had a current policy. It was just a general letter from the insurance but it was dated and said "as a current policy holder". I got off with a small fine.

It is the worst feeling in the world. Car smashed, potentially forever, driving and and a massive fine and probably lose your job.

I have to admit it somewhat restored my faith in our justice system.

You assume it will auto renew but the liability is always with you to make sure you have that certificate. I will always double check from now on!

What is it with this forum, seriously ? Guy gets his 40k car nicked by armed robbers and all you go on about is how much of a "turkey" he is. I bet if it happened to you (and mistakes do happen with insurance) you would not be happy if we called you that.

Get a life!

He had a 5 door Audi A3. A really nice, safe car with the latest safety features, a really good Euro NCAP score, ISOFIX child mounting points, etc. Very safe. Probably one of the safest cars on the road for a small child.

Not at all but the amount of people out there chopping and changing between late model Audi's and paying, each time, in cash are the exception rather than the rule. So much so that you try reading the look on the salesman face when you say you'll pay cash for a car - they are genuinelly suprised. Because it just doesnt happen most of the time.

I forgot, he's got a kid now, cut him some slack, never mind about sorting your insurance. You'd have a different viewpoint for sure if it was your car he'd crashed into instead of having his Q5 nicked I am sure!

Some things in life are just too important for us NOT to have the time to do them. Insuring your £37,000 car is one of these things.

So yea, it's unreasonable that his car wasn't a high enough priority. As I said in my first post the punishment he has received for this is not somethnig I'd wish on anyone - nobody deserves to lose this much money. But even so, come on, what was he doing!

This notion that if you have a 'life' you can be forgiven for driving around on bald tyres or not bothering to fix headlight bulbs or sort insurance or any of the other things we've had on here in the past (Thats right, I was a sad loner for checking my tyres were legal apparently) is just daft.

Well some people have a busy life what with kids and im presuming a very good job to go from a 20k s3 (or 10k old s3) to a 37k Q5 therefore they dont really have time to get their cars leather restitched due to a kink in the leather

Not sure what your point is other than to have a jab at Fox, if he does have a great job like you can reasonably presume, that's been down to intelligence, logical thought and good organisational skills? Being forgetful is not doing the washing up or picking up milk on your shopping trip, letting such an insurance premium lapse is very careless. He obviously cares very much in order to get a new, big, safe car (the S3 would've done the job imo but that's not here or there), but is lackadaisical enough to just not check his insurance when buying this car?

Getting anything robbed is horrible and nobody "deserves" to have a car stolen or damaged, but to not maintain the insurance policy on a car worth nearly 40k is monumentally slack no matter how many kids you've got.

Ah right, fair enough then. Thats ok then :)

What we need is some sort of exemption in the law to take into account how busy some peoples lives are.

Oh, I see what you did there!

To be fair, if your an MP, there is. Or atleast seems to be !?

Instead of trying to argue against Fox you realised you have nothing to argue against his very valid and well reasoned point so in turn took the monkey about him sorting something out for the car

Now about someone having such a busy life, not being able to think of something like insurance. If he has such a hard an busy life, I really am surprisble he has been able to:

- Remember to feed the kids (Gosh, buying food, cooking it, feeding them).
- Remember where his car keys are located.
- Remember what the name of his wife is.
- Remember how to fill up a car with petrol, which is pretty much up with with insurance and knowing how to drive.

I could go on with meanginless comments, but in teh grand scheme of things they are just as stupid as 'he has a kid and abusy life so cut him some slack for forgetting to insure his car'.

FYI, read Fox' point again and digest :)

Im guessing for some people family takes priority over their cars and therefore checking if their insurance has auto renewed (which it probably has for the last 10 years) is the last thing on their mind. Its not like hes not going to have the cash therefore the payment wouldnt bounce, so why would he be concerned ?

This is like you posting up that your electricity is turned off because they didnt take the direct debit for that month. I guess thats your fault too because you didnt check ?

Every time something bad happens to someone its posted up here, about 5 replies of "i feel sorry for the guy" and theres a big ocuk investigation into the victims life.

Sad.

Direct debit monthly electricty payments = annual insurance payment + auto renewal

I can tell you were not the star maths pupil back at school ;)

Whatever happened to personal responsibility? Sure it's sad the guy lost £37ks worth of car but I'm afraid it was his own fault. If he had left £37,000 in cash on full display in his front window would you not think he was a bit silly if it got stolen? Why wasn't he as careful with the £37,000 worth of vehicle on his drive? At the end of the day I'm afraid it's his own fault.

And kids are no excuse, I've got a very young child and I'm finding I'm still able to have a normal life. They aren't awake 24x7 you know. If anything I've had *more* time to spend on things like paperwork and the house as I'm going out less. If your 'priorities' involve losing £37,000 of your family's money then I would suggest you have them slightly wrong. If the same thing happened to me I'd be the first to agree that I was a total idiot to be so complacent with such a large sum of money and I expect that is how the guy feels himself.

You fail at comparisons.

Its not a trivial matter car insurance, its not something you overlook, I have kids, bought multiple houses, changed jobs, gone on holiday, got divorced, remarried, had affairs, been sacked, been promoted etc etc in the time since I've been driving, and I have never once neglected to insure, MOT or tax or have the correct ownership details on the V5 for any of the 30 vehicles I've owned since 1992. (16 motorbikes and 14 cars).
Or any of the vehicles at work when I was transport manager (a fleet of 28 vehicles at the time).

When his new certificate of insurance came through surely he'd have noticed it only ran for 2 weeks. I dont get it.

I once had a cert that only lasted a week instead of a year and in my hurry to leave the morning it arrived I failed to notice it, wasn't until I went to buy tax some months later that I spotted the error :(

Highly insensitive

He's obviously had his brand new car nicked. We're not hearing the whole story, but thats no need to specificly register and start picking his story about.

If he wants to embelish it to get more sympathy on the internet, thats his problem.

The motors forum, being sensitive?

You fail

Corrected ;)

What about house insurance, technically the keys were stolen from the house - allowing them access to the car.
