rage against the x-factor - Outcome: RATM is the Christmas Number One!

Companies aim to get sales not chart positions. Charts are literally just a summary of sales figures. All that matters is how many records are sold.*

Joe would normally have been #1 -- if he's #2 with the same sales the record company will have made the same profit.**

The only downside is they can't market it later as "featuring the number one single"

*Yes I know that contradicts itself. :p

**In fact tons more considering RATM is on the same label. :p

It's PMKeates. He's always on the other side of the argument for kicks. ;)
If it weren't 10 vs 1 it would be too easy ;) :p
So getting a great song to #1 is distorting the charts. People buying a song they like isn't allowed.
If they had bought they song because they like it, fine. However, the group was set up, designed and run to maximise RATM's position in the chart, and for no other purpose.

Joe would normally have been #1; if he's #2 the record company will have still made the same profit.
That's a good point. All any of us have done is line the pockets of Sony.

There's a huge irony that RATM's revolutionary politics have just been spun in their face, as they've garnered a ton of money for a giant corporation, and a ton of publicity for Simon Cowell and the X-Factor.
