Nokia N900

Aeroplane mode? How do you turn that on?

My battery was rubbish for the first few days, its way better now, this happened to anyone else?

on Nokia's it's called "Flight Mode" - it shuts off all wireless radios (for safety on flights, obviously :))

you should be able to select it at the profile-change-screen... short-press the power button maybe?

some battery guy said:
ordinarily, (especially for things like laptops) it's best to discharge Li-Ion batteries as little as possible. obviously in a phone like this that's not really possible, but its a good idea to charge the battery whenever you have the opportunity.
the reason why a couple of full charge-discharge cycles are required to get the battery to it's highest capacity is because on a new battery, the charge/capacity monitoring hardware has not been calibrated yet, and fully charging, discharging and charging again ought to set this properly. it's probable that the batteries capacity monitoring hardware (i'll explain why it's there in a sec) thinks the battery has less overall capacity then it really has.

OpenTTD running on my N900. :D

LPL, how the hell do you install on the phone??? I am alright about using the GUI but am just too timmeh to work the other stuff out. For example, I have a zip program but can't work out how to get it on there...

As for battery life, mine is getting better, day and a half to 2 days.

Add the Extras-Testing Repository to your phone.

Open your App Manager, click the title bar for the drop down menu. Select Application Catalogues, click "New", add the following:

Catalogue name: Extras-Testing
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-testing/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free

Go back to App manager main screen, click "Download" and it should get the new catalogs list of apps appear with the rest of the available apps, Open-TTD is under under the games subcategory.

A warning, explained better than I can put it:

If you decide to use this repository, please be aware of two possible "risks":

* applications contained there may NOT be correctly "optified". This means that some of them may NOT obey the rule to install larger packages in the large 2 GB /opt partition rather than the small (70 MB or so of free space on a "fresh" device) rootfs. This may lead to the "/" (root) partition getting filled. Of course, once you notice this, you may just unistall those applications, so it is not "irreversible"
* apps in Testing may NOT pay too much attention to proper power management. This means that installing some of the applications from Testing may result in shorter battery life. Again, as above, if you notice such an issue, you can uninstal the "problematic" software.

Also, if you are connected to the Extras-Testing Repository your phone may nag you about there being new versions of apps you already have installed ready to download, it'll be downloading them from Testing, so its up to you if you want to go ahead or not, you can just ignore it.

If you want to turn Extras-Testing catalog off again, select it from the list of catalogs in App Manager and click the wee disabled checkbox at the bottom, hit save. Phone will update its lists and the apps available will be just the usual ones again.

EDIT: I cant believe i forgot this;

You need to go to Game Options, Screen Resolution - 800x420. If you dont, you'll have a damn hard time trying to figure out how to actually start a new game, as some of the buttons are off the screen! :D It'll look like this (as opposed to my previous screenshot above):

Choo-choo! :) Oh and you'll definitely be needing your stylus. ;)

Theres Extras-Devel too; but the apps in there really are still in proper development, not really reccommended for anyone who just wants a hastle free time.

If you are using apps from extras-testing do remember to report problems to the developer, thats what they are there for.

Im about ready to go daft here. Play have delayed the phone until the 8th of January now! Ive held off to save 30 quid as its on there for 470 but im wondering if id be aswell just ordering from Nokia and paying 30 quid extra to actually get the phone.

rant over.......

If you buy the phone through Topcashback you can get £40 off the retail price, plus I am sure there is a Nokia 10% discount floating about..

right, anyone done a good comparison to the iphone yet?
i want one or the other, N900 or iphone 3G S!!

iPhone infects you with aids. Honest.

...and the N900 is made of pure Chuck Norris tears and ergo is the cure.

From the general feeling I got looking for the 900, the iphone has more apps and is more shiney. People know what an iphone is, they rarely know what an N900 is but I am yet to see something for iphone that disappoints me by not being on the N900. The release rate for apps is great as well.

TO be honest, what do you want the phone for? Just browsing the internet, poating on forums etc, I find the N900 much better than my mate's 3GS and he reluctantly agrees. There is no need to install a facebook app if you don't want to, you use the proper website instead for example. Sure, it's a resistive screen but the keys are better than even a cap acreen for typing so I see no beef there. The screen is actually excellent and I find it as easy to use as an iphone screen.

Music-wise, I haven't got millions of gigs of songs and am not aware of being able to use itunes, but the ones I have play very nicely and the fm transmitter is ace.

The iphone, for me, lacks the soal of the N900 and that's why I went this route, it is a better all-round machine, just not for girls and people who want to look good dahliiiiiing...

If you think you want an Iphone, get it, as you are more likely to enjoy using it then n900. No point buying something you won't get as much enjoyment out of regardless of how much crappier iphone actually is.

no. i said i want either of these 2 and asked if anyone has done a decent comparison.
i could have bought an iphone at anytime since they have been around, but i haven't. so its not a case of 'i want an iphone'.

Hardware wise, they are almost identical but iphone I believe has a smaller screen and a little bit less ram/space, also lack of external sd card I believe, could be wrong, but il be damned before I look at iphones :p.

Battery life will probably be similar. Main issue is the software, iphone limits multitasking on the OS level, as I was informed. If you can live with a gimped and closed OS, go for iphone. If you want a more open, do whatever you want environment go for n900.

The N900 browser is pretty awesome too, theres a lot of apps on the iPhone market that you wont actually need, as you can just do it in the browser. The only app I still actually want on my N900 is a turn-by-turn Sat Nav, and apparently there's one available in January.

Although I'm not really one for gaming on my phone, and the iPhone does have a lot of games available for it, so keep that in mind. I've got OpenTTD running on it though, so I doubt I'll want any others anyway. :D

The flash implementation in the N900 browser could do with a bit of tweaking, videos on websites are still "jerky".

Games wise, I really liked this one, but its for 810 not 900. Probably may have been, will be ported eventually, but its fun to play and AI is relatively good. Apparently has multiplayer, but I don't know anyone else with 810 :p

There is freeciv, if you like turn based strategies, its pretty good, but on 810 has a few loading time issues. Which probably won't be as apparent on 900.

Had a quick browse of the games for maemo 5, and not as impressed, check out the os 2008 games list, and see what eventually will make it over.

Morba, just for you, I have been to fails4U and had a good play with a 3GS. It was worth it to watch 3 grown chimps pick their jaws up at the answer to 'whats your current phone?' and their response 'omg, that's not out yet!'but the manager was happy to swap for 30 mins and we actually had a great compare & contrast session. Suited both of us and we both agreed on the Nokia.

Reasoning: Typing on the iphone was still a struggle after half an hour and I couldn't use both thumbs with any acuracy. No matter how good the on-screen,it wasn't as good as the physical keypad. Apps were good but as above, you need less on the N900. The desktop is too 'fixed' and tidy on the iphone - less of functionality but it is prettier I must admit. Browsing was great on both as you would expect, the N900 does have a better camera. Screens, just as before, the 900 has a great screen which has no noticable difference in performance.

The iphone is slimmer and slightly better looking and the itunes integration is good but for me, more and more Maemo apps will siply blow it away.
