I'm sorry, but I disagree. I think that if you went right back to the roots of prejudice against homosexuality, you would find it spawned from religion. Also, don't forget that secular society has only existed in any real way for the past fifty years or so, and in countries like America, it still doesn't exist.

As far as I am aware the Old Testament doesn't mention the birthdate of Christ primarily because, other than in prophecy, he isn't in it. The New Testament doesn't give any dates either. So as neither give a date how can they be different?
It's funny, this is usually a statement, word for word, said by those who have been ingrained to believe that it's true without putting any actual thought in to it.

yes, but it would have to be replaced with something else - say, a form of intellectual enlightenment that uses logic and reason to understand the human condition, rather than one based on fear and control. In a way you could say that religion in highly educated societies is already making the transition to something more sensible and less childish.

I wish we did not have any religion in the world. It would be a far more peaceful world then. Its because of religion we have had countless wars in the past and even the current war in Afghanistan (although thats partly to do with oil as well but that another matter

If anyone thinks the world would be better without religion, then tell me how the BNP has one million supporters from our 'secular' society?
Every time I've ever heard Nick Griffin take the floor, he's always spoken about how evil Islam is, and how immigrants need to respect the fact that we're a Christian nation. A lot of Nick Griffin's prejudices and hatred are spawned from religion.
However, I think you're missing the point, somewhat. No one here believes that the world would be perfect without religion, of course there will be people that hold similar beliefs to Griffin with, or without religion. The question was whether the world would be better, and I believe it would.
Relatively modern religion may very well have been concieved in part for that purpose, but evidence of religious activity has been found to date back many many (even tens of ) thousands of years long before the Abrahamic religions existed.
