Nice neighbours...

yup woman drivers, i was out dropping of next catalogues today in an 18 ton truck, goin down icy streets is not fun.

a woman decideds to pull out when im coming down an iced hill, so im not stopping in a hurry, she winds the window down and starts screaming all sorts for about a minute, if she would have waited 5 seconds in the junction i would have been passed :/ she eventually reveresed back.

I was told in my lessons to give a cyclist the same room as I would when passing a car as they may wobble or even fall off, I always leave them loads of room. Nothing to do with spatial awareness.

Well if that happens the guy behind you will get him. That's like saying you shouldn't drive next to a pavement with pedestrians on it in case one of them trips and falls in front of your car.

You're the kind of guy you get stuck behind for five minutes whilst they wait for a huge gap in the traffic, just so they can give the cyclist a super-wide berth just in case he falls over :(.

I find loads of people don't wait. Instead they choose to move into the other lane (which I'm usually driving in ) towards on comming traffic but they seem to think that it's ok to this because they're overtaking.

I'm impressed that you can accurately determine my driving style from a couple of lines I wrote on the internet. Well done

No wonder so many people in the UK hate cyclists, if you are taught to pass them as if it was a car :eek:. Even bus drivers here manage to pass cyclists while more or less staying on their own lane therefore not blocking the opposite lane...

Its ok mate, he is always semi trollin' from what I have read so far

Well that would explain things a bit, I was going to give him the benefit of the doubt in that he doesn't know the roads I drive on the most or the traffic conditions but trolling would also explain it I guess. If I'm driving along an empty NSL road and passing a cyclist who is going at 20 or 30mph I think it would be a bit rude to fly past at 60mph a couple of inches away. Some how easing off a bit and moving well over results in me holding everyone up for 5 minutes :D

That was the advice I was given, I don't get a ruler out and check but I do give them plenty of space.

Generally it's not an issue as most roads are easily wide enough for at least 3 cars. Some of the narrower roads though, the hedges are already kept back by the larger vehicles passing along the roads so there genuinely isn't enough space to squeeze through - definitely not for larger vehicles, and even a car would be a squeeze.

I know what you mean, there are some narrow streets where indeed, you have to go over the half to pass a cyclist or wait a little bit till there's more space, but what I noticed when I was in the UK, cyclist used to join the queue as cars and cars kind of treated them like cars if you know what I mean, even on wide roads. Here people ''imagine'' a small lane on the right when with cyclists as if both the car and the bike have their own on roads that are wide enough and no specific maneuver is required to pass cyclists.

Yesterday I was tootling down a road at 15mph (icy) and was approaching one of those crossings that has the 'right of way' arrows on it either side, so it's easy to tell who has the right of way.

There were two cars coming towards it, I was already getting there before them, and since it was my right of way anyway, they would have to stop.

Cue this fat mid 30's woman stopping as I go through, she proceeds to open her door (in my path to stop me!) she was ****** and blinding, whilst shaking her huge fist. I slowed down, drove around her door and tooted my horn and carried on. The guy behind her was in stitches :D

Sometimes I wish I had one of those skyhawk systems :)

Jeez. Had a woman outside work (Teesside Uni) cut across a 'Right of Way' (single file speedbump with traffic islands either side) as I was about to cross it. Absolutely idiotic behaviour - the worst of it was that she acted and mouthed and gestured that it was my fault and SHE had right of way.

Another one was a T-Junction, I was turning right around the blind T (approaching from the long bisecting road) and crept forward a bit since it was a blind one. Then a crazy woman in an Astra comes wanging down the road, so I apply the anchors, killing all 2MPH of my speed. As she goes past me, she reduces to a crawl and gives me all these curses and gestures... then, I had to laugh. She mounted the kerb and presumably scuffed her alloys.
I was off like a shot out of fear of my life.

Seriously, some very angry women drivers out there. Be warned!

I am not trolling, I am simply pointing out that it is unnecessary for a car to leave an enormous amount of room between it and the cyclist that is being overtaken.

If a minor disagreement classes as trolling in your book, then you have much to learn. Some people it seems are simply too immature to indulge in a lively discussion without immediately resorting to accusations of trolling, presumably because they lack the intelligence to debate back :o.

Anyway I think the rage is kicking in on the roads in a big way. Last night there was a Mini Cooper sliding all over the road on the way home and accordingly driving very slowly. The car in front of me got fed up with the slow pace and decided to aggressively overtake on a very icy road, vigorously beeping on the way past!!! Insane.

FWIW, I too was taught to leave the same space as I would for a car. However I do consider that excessive, so don't tend to leave that much space unless there's a substantial difference in our speeds (e.g. NSL road), but if there's less than say 1.5ft spare, I would not normally overtake, simply because cyclists can often wobble significantly, especially when being passed.

Say what you are like and you are still wrong. Also, you have been asked not to use the picture you stole as your sig by the person who it belongs to.

When passing motorcyclists and cyclists, give them plenty of room (see Rules 162-167). If they look over their shoulder it could mean that they intend to pull out, turn right or change direction. Give them time and space to do so.

give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car (see Rules 211-215)

I used to ride my bike to and from school, 40/30 mph road, usually cars parked on one side of it near the school.

I tell you now, I used to **** my pants if a big double decker or car came by really close to me, even though I stuck to the kurb and even if there was nothing coming the other way.

Please please please give the bike user a bit more room than you normally would do, if it is safe to do so. Karma will thank you for it, and the time you spend waiting/going slower you will make up in seconds on a NSL road, or you'll be held at the next junction/traffic light anyway and wonder why you were in such a rush in the first place.

Just my 2 pence :)

This is a flaw in the UK system/highway code. Were the guys who wrote it on crack ? Is it written to deliberately cause congestion ?
You can point it out all you like. You're still wrong.
He's not really. This is horribly inefficient use of the roads, luckily here they advise 1+ meter of space and say ''if there is less than 1 meter space but you must overtake them anyways ( for example a cyclist) do so very slowly'', not ''give motorcyclists, cyclists and horse riders at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car'', no wonder all you guys say cyclists also clog up the roads if you overtake them like that . It's not the cyclists, but the wrongly taught drivers overtaking them clogging your roads...

So did I, I used to cycle to school for 6 years on a road where many buses rode, I often got overtaken in a very small gap by a bus, this is normal, those guys are driving for a living, have a little trust...
