The Japanese researchers called for further research in other countries but they stopped short of any suggestion that lithium be added to drinking water.

No one is saying they are going to or should ad it to water merely that the varying levels around the world could be studied to see if it is actually true.

As for the original idea they are not yet putting lithium in the water (or indeed any derivative since as pointed out it reacts quite violently with water) although there is a question as to whether we should be attempting to take away a persons 'right' to commit suicide. If someone can be kept artificially happy (for want of a better phrase) then should we do it?

I was going to say. I remember a chemistry lesson at school where the teacher took out a lump of lithium from an oil-filled jar and put it into a bowl of water where it promptly set alight with a red flame and whizzed round the bowl.
