Interesting car, £1000, GO!

I was expecting to see it the same way, but from the heaps we've seen all over the place in dealers this was leaps and bounds ahead of basically all of them - all the ones I'd actually want anyway. All the other cars for similar money that were nice were dullish saloons, a couple of coupes, and people carriers!

I needed a car reasonably sharpish as mine was... well taken away from me, so to speak (I won't go into it, family drama) so it pretty much had to be relatively local. There were a few of these within 40 miles or so up for less but all were 100k plus miles and much more tatty.

Going private would have helped money wise as well, but as it's been a rushed purchase it needed to temporarily go on a credit card for a few weeks which pretty much left us with dealers.

two grand??? surely they aren't that sort of money?

The XSi's that were reachable were between £1k and £2.5k. The ones that looked decent were £1300 - £2500. There was another one we were going to look at £1500, 85k miles but it'd gone by this morning.

If it wasn't a case of needing a car quite badly, very soon, we could have waited for a bargain but you can't always do it.

PX price for that car in perfect condition is £1100 trade in. Theres no way he's paid more than a grand for that so he's made himself a nice profit

But the cheapest you'd find that retail at would be £1500. he's got to make a profit off it otherwise why bother being a trader ?

Indeed, one gave me a good run for my money in my 172

Must have had a gti engine in it then, I have a cammed 1.3 with 4 branch and a few other mods. Its a great fun car but wouldn't be anywhere near on par with a 172.

I did suspect it was running something other than stock considering he was 3 up and I was working hard to keep up with him

My 172 had RR'd at just under stock power a few weeks before aswell

nice but way overpriced... thats mint gti6/xsara VTS moleh.

I looked at some GTi-6s, I'd have loved one but insurance was no go, I passed my test this month! Looked at Saxo VTS/VTRs as well but in dealers to be honest they were the same sort of money as these, nice examples anyway. The VTR I sat in felt really ***** as well, and this is slightly more power than a VTS in a heavier car, the XSis are 2.0s so it goes plenty well enough.

In all honesty from dealers within 30 miles this was the best car that I actually like under £2k. With what we had to work with (dealers, a few days) I'm happy with it. Given more time I could have waited for one as nice as this to come up cheaper but we didn't have more time.

Plus don't tell anyone but I've only paid £1250 of my own money for it, my dad put the rest in because I needed a car sharpish, shhh

Shame you had no choice, but sounds like you've got the best you could - let's hope it's reliable!!

Has it got any other mods apart from the alloys?

Some sort of exhaust on it, not big and not loud but not stock. I don't know about the brand. It doesn't seem to have been lowered and the ride certainly doesn't indicate cheap coilovers or anything.

I love the car, given more time no we wouldn't have paid this much for one, but as well as being the one of the most expensive ones within the distance we were looking at it was also the best one so to be honest I'm not that fussed on the money.

Whoever's had it before has obviously looked after it, it's got all the stamps, the mileage is genuine, and it has one dent on the bonnet that I reckon will pull out (it's not creased, just a shallow dip) and a small scratch on the back bumper. Aside from that it's not got a mark on it that I've managed to find so far. No parking dings on the doors, no scuffs on the door lips like all the others had, no nothing.

Everything else we could find for this much money was either really boring, had been molested or was really tatty with bits falling off everywhere. It's been a week of high drama in this house, bigtime, but the end result is I've got a decent little car and spending a bit extra to get something with a bit of poke means I won't get bored of it so quick, all the little 1.4s and whatnot would have seen more bored in no time, so hopefully it'll be a keeper for a couple of years.

306 looks rather old now though

I'd rather it look old than toilet like a huge amount of newer cars do :p
