Will this be fast?? - spec me an alternative please!

Hi,

I have the opportunity of buying the following at a very good price (£550 in total)

HP Mini Tower (ML115 Server) [Black/Silver]
Quad-Core AMD Opteron 2.10Ghz
8GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM
DVD-ROM Drive
DVD-RW Drive
1x 160GB SATA
3x 1TB SATA Hitachi 7200rpm 16MB Cache
1GB Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT
23" Samsung Monitor (Wide Screen Aspect) 2048x1152 [Black]
External USB Audio Box
Trust Speakers
Huey Monitor Calibration Device (Boxed)
HP Mouse
HP Keyboard
Canon Multifunction MP620 - Colour Inkjet (boxed) [Scanner/Printer]

Will this be as fast as the current quad core intel's and phenoms?

Cheers

Matt

To be honest, I wouldn't buy that. £550 is a lot of money for a not particularly powerful, old tech, no-warranty system - even if it does come with a half-decent monitor.

If you want a system for games, something like this would be far better - or build it for yourself.

So the quad core wont be as fast as a dual core amd?

Im not into games much so i could upgrade that at a later date.

i thought it was a good price tbh considering the printer, monitor and 3x1tb hard drives were included. Plus the 8gb ram isnt gonna be slow is it?

It depends what you use it for, but for most things the 2.9GHz Dual core will be faster than the 2.1GHz, old tech quad core.

Also, 8GB of RAM won't give you any speed boost for the vast majority of tasks. Usually 4GB is more than enough.

This is what the monitors costs new with a 3 year warranty.

3x 1TB drives are nice to have, but I wouldn't want Hitachi drives if I had the choice.

If you aren't into games much and want a budget, muti-tasking machine, I would suggest looking at getting a system built around this CPU. Here is a new build that would be much faster and cost about the same:

You can get 2x as fast for £550 excludeing the monitor :( as above buy a ready built pc from OC or build your own.

So its not worth it then.

I think i will do that then and buy the stuff from ocuk and build it myself.

Just thought it was a bargain cause of the 8gb ram, quad core, 3tb hd, printer and monitor

Thats a server.

cmndr_andi's advice and alternate build/spec is the way forward for your budget - it's a far more balanced and robust spec for the money.

I really wouldnt recommend it. For the kind of money your paying for that PC you have quite a plethora of other ways you can go. A machine using an Intel i5 is definately possible. If the large TFT monitor is important for you a machine with an Intel Core2Quad/4870 would be right in your price range. The 3TB of HDD is nice, but at the end of the day I'd go with having a warranty on the parts, indifferently; with hard disks.

Hi,

Thanks all for the help.

My budget isnt only £550 , i do actually have, and did originally budget £1200 for a new setup.

But to spend £1200 it would have to be a cut above the normal for me to spend that.

I will use it for photography, fsx, normal uni work, some movie editing etc

What would be the best system for £1200? (must include a decent monitor of at least 24")

Matt

You could try something like this:
33tgn48.jpg
You could cut the price down a little more with some changes (though personally I'd keep those parts just in case...). Windows 7 HP Retail because it's not much more than the OEM, lets you do upgrades/install on a new system.

I think the OCZ ddr3 could be a problem in the above build - doesn't it run at 1.8-1.9 volts? (P55/i5's need 1.5-1.65 volt memory, I think)

Oops, accidentally clicked on the wrong kit! Low voltage kit is what you want.

Now that I have more time, I'll elaborate on my suggestion...you can save more money on my spec by swapping the case for an Antec 300, and the change the power supply for a VX550. You could go for OEM parts (Windows, the i5), and get a cheaper display (depending on what you'll be doing; you might find the lower end displays sufficient, though for photography, likely not).

Lamboman's spec is good but i would try get a HP LP2475w with it since you stated you want the pc for photography use aswell and it's ideal for that.(you could drop the 5850 to a 5770 if you do not have the extra cash for it, worth it to be honest and can always add a 2nd if needed since that 650w psu would handle it.)
