James Cameron's 'Avatar' - The next gen of cinema

TBH, the script is aimed at anyone who enjoys modern day cinema.

OK people may perceive the storey as overdone but the way its told in Avatar is unique.

I haven't seen it yet.

There is some cheese in it I have heard.

I was listening to some crtitics on radio 4 and they said it was cringeworthy cinema.

Will see it this week

Watch it and form your own opinion.

I'm finding it hard to recall cheese anywhere in the film and I have a pretty good memory.

It'll be interesting to hear your views once you have seen it ! :)

Yes there is cheese, but it's good cheese. :D

Amazing film, possibly the best I have ever seen. (Remember guys, this is my opinion)

Im not going to write a massive review but in a nutshell;

Great CGI, great sound, immersive storey, good acting and to top it of, looked outstanding in 3D.

In all, my best cinema experience yet.
Agree. Quoting myself:

To be honest, a film for me is all about physical, mental and emotional impact. How, and what does it make me feel and think while sitting there, as well as after it finishes.

I'm not one to get hung up over storyline, acting, believability, direction, and so on.

Yes some elements of this film were not the best, and other films will have done certain things far better.

However as a complete package, this is the best movie that I have yet experienced.

There were definitely a few cheesy scenes in there. Trying to avoid spoilers here but for example, the speech given by the head of security about half-way through the movie? Pretty cringeworthy.

That's not to say they really affect enjoyment of the movie at all. If you look past that and enjoy the bigger picture it's still a fantastic ride.

Film is still doing extremely well at the box office! First week was $76m, 2nd was $74m and this wk was $68m (all in the States). Could possibly be up for challenging The Dark Knight with ticket sales ($531m)!!

Heard on the news that Avatar has taken $1 billion at the box office. That is incredibly quick, the other films took months to make this figure.

Any one think Titanic might lose its top spot? Personally I thought nothing would dethrone Titanic, but I may have been mistaken.

You can see all the stats here: http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatar.htm

I'd originally predicted $500m domestic - I think 550 is more likely now.

Well, all I can say is that our 4 year old sat transfixed throughout the whole film and only had to go to the loo once, which is unbelievable. He was also able to recount the story when we came back home.

You took a four year old to see this? You know Disney do films don't you? :)

Fastest film ever to reach $1 billion... 17 days after its release, has surpassed $1 billion... Expect a sequel...

Sequels were already announced before weren't they?
Or at least the plots of a sequel was announced although not sure if it was official or not. Something to do with going to different planets or different moons of the same planet

The average cost for seeing this is higher than usual though as the BBC site says?

So much for piracy killing cinema, it just shows people get bored of the same old tripe!

Higher than a usual film? Or higher than a 3D film? The cinemas around me charge more for 3D films (couple of quid), and Avatar fell into this category.

Cameron has written 3 apparently.

Pretty sure they meant higher because it was in 3D (well at least you had the option of paying more for 3D)

Oops, the racism accusations are flying already!

Yep, Avatar is all about race, according to the slightly bizarre article here.

These are movies about white guilt. Our main white characters realize that they are complicit in a system which is destroying aliens, AKA people of color - their cultures, their habitats, and their populations. The whites realize this when they begin to assimilate into the "alien" cultures and see things from a new perspective. To purge their overwhelming sense of guilt, they switch sides, become "race traitors," and fight against their old comrades.

But then they go beyond assimilation and become leaders of the people they once oppressed. This is the essence of the white guilt fantasy, laid bare. It's not just a wish to be absolved of the crimes whites have committed against people of color; it's not just a wish to join the side of moral justice in battle. It's a wish to lead people of color from the inside rather than from the (oppressive, white) outside.

Think of it this way. Avatar is a fantasy about ceasing to be white, giving up the old human meatsack to join the blue people, but never losing white privilege. Jake never really knows what it's like to be a Na'vi because he always has the option to switch back into human mode.

"White guilt fantasy" or good old fashioned talentless Hollywood escapist drivel? Hmm, it's a tough call.
