Overconfident 4x4 drivers in snow

I don't like a lot of 4x4 drivers at the best of times. To slow in good conditions, too fast in bad conditions.

^^ i concur.

The other day, for the first time in 4.5 years driving, had to pull over to let a 4x4 go because he was literally a metre from my bumper in proper ice conditions. 4x4 drivers thinking they're God is up there with "Sidelight morons" and "Middle Lane Morons".

And Foglight morons. If it's not foggy, turn your ****** foglights off. It doesnt make your Pug 106 look any cooler.

The main thing they seem to be unable to comprehend is while they may have twice as many driving wheels, they still have the same number of braking wheels. And when your car is twice the weight, that means it's going to be even harder to stop, no matter how good it is at getting out of your slightly icy driveway.

Yeh bt 4x4 is ultamite gripz innitz y0?

You need winter tyres for snow, even on a 4x4. Much softer compound and enhanced tread pattern although surprisingly not much deeper. I have Conti Cross Contact Winter tyres on my Q7 and they are awesome in the snow, and I'm not talking UK snow either ;)

Well when you see a usually tinted out RR proding around in the snow with it's bling wheels on you can be sure he's going to crash. I seen one pile into the barrier on a bit of dual carridgeway. Did chuckle quite a bit.

As had been said, snow tyres are what make the real difference and having driven on them in both Switzerland and Norway, in Norway with spikes I can see why countries like this don't suffer like the UK when it snows. THIS is where the differences are, not really about clearing snow off the roads more about putting tyres on the car that make it easier to drive on the snow.

And 4x4 = improved traction. Still brakes, turns and stops as badly as 2wd, it just gets going better.

crud, three audi 4x4 drivers in a thread

even with eagle F1s, i was amazed at how the car even managed to move on sheet ice

Directional tyres like the F1's suck in the snow more than non directional tyres, the tread gets full of snow faster and they can't get rid of it!

I walked out my house once and a woman taking her children to school in a 4x4 skidded into a bollard in the middle of the road. It was in proper slow motion as she skidded slowly into it... it was brilliant.

i was amazed yesterday at the sheer stupidity of one man. Our estate is on a hill, and getting out involves pulling out of several side roads on hills.

Needless to say, he lost all momentum at the side roads, and then came to complete stop to fully make sure no traffic was comming. Once stopped, he then proceeded to try and and go up the slope, this was met with a slight slipping of the wheels due to the ice.

His response ?

mash the accelerator harder untill it moves. Of course he just sat there spinning his wheels polishing the ice. I had to take the same corner not minutes later, and kept my momentum up, and proceeded to breeze up the hill with ease, all by just not mashing the pedals in a ham fisted manor.

yes still in it till i find a suitable replacement

and on the contrary, the Z28NET v6 in the vectra is heavy old lump (kerbweight is well over 1600kilos) so i have lots of nice weight pressing down on the front axle. Not had any issues with the vectra so far at all. Not that ive not provoked with the handbrake in empty carparks that is ;)

no, that would be irresponsible ;)

the scariest thing ive seen in the last few weeks was whilst passing a side road, looking to the left and seeing CRV thing sliding backwards down the hill toward me with a fella behind the car trying to stop it sliding back

not just me then..

had a 4x4 up my arse yesterday while i was doing 20mph on a 30 on an untreated - but not deep snow road, turned left on the roundabout onto a dual carriageway with 1 lane pretty clear and proceeded to accellerate gently, this ****** went into the snow covered outside lane and put his foot down, he soon realised his mistake and slowed down enough for me to catch him up again at 30mph
