What do you miss about PC Gaming?

Actually you know what, I dont think PC gaming has changed much, I think console gaming has changed loads.

I miss real console gaming more than I do PC gaming. When you could put something on the SNES and sit on your own and play a really decent, really gripping, single player game for hours. In fact even for PC, as someone has already said, a really good single player game like half-life or deus-ex.

Too many games these days rely on online multiplayer.

yeah, now we seem to be limited by them, and the games seem to be designed with them in mind rather than the better PC platform that got gaming started anyway, well the way we know it.

the only game genre that don't seem to be affected by these damm 4 year old things is simulators, IL2, lock on, train/railway sims, and RTS, drving games seem less affected also, mainly becasue they would have to be up against the consoles exclusive games, which are great games, in their own right

Yet when a game like Crysis comes along trying to push the boundaries everyone whines that they can't run it. :p

But yea, I agree.

In-game community. You don't see it so much these days. Don't know whether voice chat has taken over completely (although must be external 'cause don't hear in-game chatter much either), or that everyone hates everyone else. But it just seems that people play and move on.

A really good Star Wars game, like X-wing, Rogue Squadron or anything space battley...that needed a joystick for fun.

Some communities.

Single player games to the quality of HL1 and HL2 (always rare I know) which have a decent amount of gameplay rather than just setting you up for the multiplayer like MW2. As much as I like multiplayer a gripping single player game can be epic too.

More exclusive games would be nice, or at least games that make the most of the hardware a lot of PC gamers have rather than it feeling like playing a console games just a bit better when a lot could be a lot better, GTA4 although a good game could have surely been better in terms of performance and graphics on PC in comparison to its console counter parts which have much slower hardware.

I dislike the move away from dedicated servers shown by MW2, hopefully it isn't a sign of things to come in the future.

I too miss the books you got with games with maps etc, a bit pointless and not great environmentally but it felt like a quality product when you bought a retail copy of a game.

New series of game, not to say there isn't new series appearing but it seems like almost every thing is a sequel or they are making a third installment, as fantastic as TF2, Fallout 3 and the half life episodes are if you have already played the games before it unless there has been a big gap between the too like between HL1 and HL2 they are going to feel quite similar, and everyone gets bored of games eventually, the gap between l4d and l4d2 was very short, it's a shame they couldn't of used that time to make something as new and as fresh as Portal was when it was released.

I also miss Baldur's Gate, I'm not sure if there is anything modern that is quite like it.

Despite saying all this I think PC gaming is as good as it's ever been, best graphics, cheapest games, great online games, steam + its friends and community stuff and being able to play all the old favourites at 300fps :) .

I miss the old games :( i used to play a game called Devastation, until digital studios went broke and the masterserver went down. Cant play it online anymore :'( we have to use the All Seeing Eye and xfire to view the servers ( if theres any still up )
also people are more mature. I loved watching the "YOUR MUM" jokes fly around on css servers etc.

:D

for a tiny disk and a tiny manual to ship in

that and dedi servers :(

I had a C&C box that was atleast 2 feet wide... Was awesome.

I miss the fact nobody seems pleased with the games anymore, back in the 90's it was like phwoah look at the graphics and the gameplay it's stunning now everyone seems a bit... worn out and isn't interested anymore. :(

I still notice new a great graphics like in Grid and Dirt2 but I agree I don't get the wow anymore like I did in the past.

Opening up the big cardboard boxes with the new game smell, interesting manuals that aren't just a list of the controls

yeah crysis was a game that pushed, but it was boring well it is boring compared to some other games, yes I have played it I can play it on my system that what it was built for to see what all the fuse was about :p this PC also allowed me to play some hidden great games or well I ll be honest good games like merc 2 for example which would run like crap on most mainstream systems

only whay to bring PC gaming back is learn how to make PC games to start off with or something related to it, than team up with other people and make a project, something very hard to do

Not sure what I miss about PC Gaming. The huge boxes taking up half of any game shop holds good memories, but I'd still probably go for the Steam versions if the huge boxes were still around.

Came a point recently where I needed shelf space and the old boxes are now in the loft. Did notice a few old mags from the mid 90's while up there too and I can tell you this. Magazines are so thin now compared. So there that's what I miss. Thick magazines with loads of reviews and cover CD's that were worth the price alone.

Like others have said. Times change and you either change with them, or you don't.

I only really miss my mouse and keyboard. I'm far more competent when it comes to FPS games on the PC - I spent countless hours playing Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer, it is/was easily one of my favourite games. In terms of online FPS, I don't get the same enjoyment from a console - probably aided by the fact I'm not as good on there!

I've been without Windows on my computer for a while now, so I haven't touched any PC gaming recently. The only thing that would make me want to install it, would be to have a blast on Company of Heroes, but I've completed it several times.

The decision to end my PC Gaming was brought about because I felt constantly obliged to upgrade my system to play the latest games and it was becoming a bit of a costly addiction.

I used to get a little snigger every time I saw one of those 'PC Gaming is Dying' threads but personally, I have to say I think it's more relevant now than it ever has been.

Steam is a good counter-punch to the ever decreasing PC Game sections in shops but physical retail is still providing solid streams of people to platforms - it's just that it tends to be console ones now. Not hard to see why when you see the shop layouts, I suppose.

I think it'll be extremely interesting to see the direction that the likes of OnLive takes on. Although what version / platform of the games will they be running?

Crysis pushed the boundaries in terms of graphics but that's all it did, I'd rather a game push the boundaries of AI or something that would make for a memorable and interesting game, no one will be bothered about crysis when the majority of fps games have better graphics.

I miss the depth and comlpexity, although that could be age related but most things seem to be dumbed down beyond belief. I used to love starting a new game and being lost and totally immersed.. now everything is run to here do that, now go there.

Dunno I guess I miss not having my hand-held through every little thing..
