Sea Shepard Boat sunk

Intentionally around to obstruct a legal activity, whatever the moral or humane standpoint...yeah you got rammed (Intentionally or accidentally) Boo hoo?

Should not of been there to get rammed in the first place.

Earlier the campaigners - who are trying to stop Japan's whaling fleet - said they threw chemicals onto the whaling boat to prevent it being used.
What type of chemicals?!

"This seriously escalates the whole situation," Sea Shepherd spokesman Paul Watson said, according to The Age newspaper in Australia.
One has to wonder just how the activists will escalate things on their side.

Considering it is (was) a small and maneuverable speedboat I can't see how on earth they managed to be hit by a large and slow whaling vessel. They have nobody else to blame but themselves.

perhaps they were having mechanical issues and the boat was unable to move.

If your car broke down in the street blocking a lorry you wouldn't expect it to ram you out of the way.

I don't know enough about Sea Shepard to make an informed post, but if they are fighting to save whales I am all for that. I watched the 'Earthlings' video recently and the way the human race treats animals is disgusting.

Im glad there are some people that will go to any lengths to stop the Japs from killing whales. I've seen star trek IV and we need em.

"Until this morning the Japanese were completely unaware of the existence of the Bob Barker. This newest addition to the Sea Shepherd fleet left Mauritius off the coast
of Africa on December 18th and was able to advance along the ice edge from the West as the Japanese were busy worrying about the advance of the Steve Irwin from the North."

Hope they sink the Japs ;)

I do wonder that myself. They definately didn't ram the bigger boat like some claim but whether they intentionally stayed in that position to be hit I don't know. However if one of the youtube comments is correct and the Japanese ship ignored the Mayday then their captain/crew need to be taken to court post haste.

TBH I thought it was the man Sea Shepherd ship which would have been a mighty shame. Any way of stopping the Japanese fleet whaling is fine by me. Were they whaling illegally in Australian waters again at this point?

Exactly, getting out of the way was well within the capabilities their boat but they chose not to. Larger vessels have priority and smaller ones must yield because it is easier for them to do so.

They was dead in the water that's why the japs got it.
Wish people would read the news ....

yes Larger vessels must spray their fire equipment on smaller ones its in the maritime hand books don't you know.

You guys need to watch whale wars on discovery HD :p

They throw on board some type of non-lethal acid that stinks and is used to taint the whale meat. Sometimes they throw on cellulose type packages that just make the surface very slippy.

If you had seen the shows then you would have seen that teh japs threw back large brass nuts, flashbangs, and even used the LRAD (high SPL sound weapon) on a helicopter pilot.

That looks like a rather expensive tap to the Ady Gil, why the heck were they so close to the whaler, knowing they're made from bits of plastic - and under fire from a water cannon at close range?

Surely there's a subtle hint by then to get out of the way of the whaler's steel pointy bow? Something that agile could harass a bit craft all day and not get hit surely?

Makes me consider mechanical failure thinking about it now. Ah well, shame the whaler didnt reverse over them :p

The smaller boat was moving under it's own power at the time, or at least moving (the wake behind it shows that), which means that it would have had at least rudimentary directional control.

The Japanese vessel would have had a much harder time trying to avoid it, than the smaller one would the Japanese ship (it takes a rather long time to turn a big, heavy boat).

It wouldn't surprise me if the Sea Shepherd crew put it on a collision course and left it idling on purpose, as IIRC they've tried ramming/intimidating the Japanese ships with their bigger boats, and they constantly try to put their smaller boats in the way of the Japanese boats to get them to change course.

Having watched some of "Whale Wars" I wouldn't trust the crew of the Sea Shepherd on a Peddelo, as their attitude always appears to be rather gung ho, and they don't seem to care about anyones safety.
I think it was the captain who explained they didn't practice launching their small craft because "it's dangerous" (ignoring the fact that the best way to reduce that danger is to practice during good conditions, when they can take their time), and that they didn't want professional sailors* but people with passion, they also put people out in the launches who have zero skills in the minor things like navigating (and indeed they don't necessarily ensure that the person at the helm of the main ship knows what a heading is).

* think that was before they scared of both one of the film crews, and one of the very few experienced sailor.

I did wonder that too, however chemicals could just mean Stink bombs or paint for all we know. I can't really see anything else that would actually do any damage, except some form of concentrated acid AT the people on the boat but I very much doubt that Sea Shepherd would do that.
