Driving in snow

Have to say I agree with the others regarding for lights, unless its incredibly heavy snow (ie when visibility drops as it would in very heavy fog) any other time theres just no need for them. As others have said they don't cast a beam long enough to illuminate anything that you could actually react to in the conditions you would need them. I also find it hard to believe you haven't been dazzled by fog lights, there unnecessarily bright in these conditions.

It totally depends on what car you drive as to how much you will be dazzled, its especially worse when people in things like land rovers have them on I'm fairly low down im my car (ok i know its not that low, but it is compared to the yaris I had before) and fogs on 4*4s coupled with them normally having main beams on are horrible.

Front foglights behind me in the mini results in me turning the mirror away. It's that bad.

putting the handbrake up = ultimate fail. how could you possibly think this would help?!

I guess you didn't read the post where I said I'm a new driver.

I'm not arguing that I did the right thing, I'm not arguing I'm a pro driver. I just said it was a scary experience.

i did, but i would have thought most people who drive know what happens when you yank up the handbrake..

glad to hear nothing serious came of it though :)

Awesome commute into work today. My path/drive gritting worked wonders, then I was faced with empty roads! Lots of fun to be had ;) Though of course I behaved and didn't do anything fun... ;) Wish my commute was like this more often, empty roads, big roundabouts *sigh*

Hope you all get into work safely. :)

evidently not..

I dunno, gentle use of the handbrake in a FWD car can help point you in the direction you need to be going in my experience :D

Back to normal pretty much for me - except for my main road, which was just ice/slush  which meant people drove at 6mph. Yet every other road had been salted. Weird.

Today we've had the heaviest snow we've had this winter (still not as much as some places but a good few inches on the ground). Absolutely PMSL when I was walking in to the office from the car park and saw someone coming in in their MX5 drift car with a welded up diff :D

Car refused to budge again this morning :(

Walking to work sucks :(

Hehe I don't know weather to say 'at least you have the option' or to say 'sorry, poor you' :p ...in anycase I'm home today, I can't go anywhere, meanwhile the Vauxhall Signum that lives on the drive next to my car left a couple of hours ago, no problem ...ruddy 'every day' cars ....being able to work everyday.

I bet that must have been interesting to watch! :D

Finally North Essex has some snow!

Can't get to work today though even though i wanted to go out and have some lulz.

-10C here this morning at 8:30am. The inside of the windscreen was covered in ice which took 25 minutes to scrape/defrost it off. Car them promptly made it about 10 feet before bottoming out on the snow covering the centre of the drive. It's quite a long drive and slightly uphill so I wasn't going anywhere. Ended up walking a couple of miles to work.

Have just spent an hour clearing the drive with a friend and made it about halfway up before getting stuck again. -6C, Eagle F1s and cobbles covered in compacted snow are not a good mix. Car is now free after a push from a friend.

I know what you mean. I can't even look behind without being blinded if there is something like a Range Rover with those super bright lights right behind me at night. :o

My car is out of the ditch! Mates with Range Rovers and winches are very useful!

Right side wing is damaged, stopping the drivers door opening all the way and mirror has been come off but all things considered, not too bad!

My housemate couldn't get into his Land Rover this morning because the doors had frozen solid shut. So I drove him to work in the Z4.

I think that's probably the first time a 2 seater coupe has come to the rescue of a Land Rover in snow :D

ah my ST got stuck, coming into my estate i have to go around a blind corner so need to stop, but this stop is on ice so the cars just spin.

I had to get the passenger out to stay at the corner while i reversed and tried to take the corner without stopping which worked.

So its not going out again until the snow clears.

Would never have a car without heated windscreen and heated seats mmmm toasty
