GTA 4 performance

Got this in the deals too, it runs at a 'playable' level of fps, I think with most things on medium, looks a little shody :(

For more info:
Video Mode

Resolution scaling effects water, reflections, shadows, mirrors and the visible viewable distance. The resolution settings relate to the amount of available video memory. At 2560*1600 the game will require 320MB of video memory in addition to all the memory required for content. At 800*600 the game will require 32MB of video memory in addition to the content. Medium resolution settings are recommended for most users as higher settings are only usable if there is available video memory.

Texture Quality

Texture quality affects the visual quality of the content of the game. High setting for textures will require 600MB of video memory at a setting of 21 View Distance in addition to the memory taken by the Video Mode. A medium texture setting is recommended for most users.

Render Quality

Render quality is the texture filter quality used on most things in the world rendering. Most people would know this as anisotropic filtering. Medium settings are recommended for most users and will provide filtering beyond what the console versions can execute.

View Distance

View distance scales the distance in which different objects in the world such as building and cars are seen. Raising this option increases the distance in which high quality objects must be loaded and will increase the memory it requires. Restrictions are established to ensure the game runs optimally for most users. A setting of 22 or more will provide PC users an enhanced experience over the console versions.
Detail Distance

Detail distance scales aspects of the environment that the View Distance setting does not including vegetation, trash and other moveable objects. A setting of 10 would be the equivalent to the performance on a console. This setting has little effect on memory.
Vehicle Density

Vehicle density scales the traffic density of the traffic in the game. It has no effect on the mission vehicles or difficultly of the game, but can have a significant impact on CPU performance.

Shadow Density

Shadow Density controls the number of shadows generated for positional lights in exterior environments. These shadows are exclusive to the PC version and can have a major impact on CPU and GPU performance.
Crossfire/SLI

With the latest ATI driver (8-11 series) the game supports crossfire modes (ie. 4870x2). SLI is currently unsupported. Support will be added through a future game patch as well as an updated Nvidia driver.

Background Processes

Certain background processes can have a detrimental effect on system performance when playing GTA IV, especially on systems with minimum required system memory. Users should ensure they disable their Virus scans (especially “on-access” type scans) when running the game to maximize performance

Notice the bold bits.

You honestly don't have to turn everything up to 100, even 30 will do. And stuff like shadow density can be turned off completely.

Some people also report that using the '' -nonrestriction'' shortcut can boost fps a bit.

Is this the Steam version you're talking about? I remember there was a patch for the retail box version which fixed a load issues and boosted the performance quite a bit (on my PC anyway).

E8400 @ 3.6, 4GB DDR2, 4890 1GB

If it is the Steam version ignore, should be patched already :( It aint the best port for sure. With a bit of tweaking I got it running OK.

Load up the config file that came with the dll in the rar archive... Disable everything but aa...
EDIT: Or alternatively, you could download the old AA version '' AA test'' that only has the AA in but iirc that version only worked windowed.
I'm not exactly sure how but I'm pretty sure you can just use aa alone and not use any of the other effects with the new version.

As for slideshow, do not attempt to run this if your performance was already low, and lower your actual ( not the supersampled result) resolution a bit...

EDIT2:
[EFFECT]
UseOriginalPostProcessing=false if enabled, original game post processing is activated

EDIT3:
So making

everything false should do it.

Well ordinarily running the benchmark I get:

I'm a bit confused as to why it thinks the GPU is different, also the 7 Ultimate is because i'm on RTM still and the CPU is actually at 3.4GHz.

run the game at 1680 x 1050 most settings if not all high and its smooth as butter  must be lucky

only have a 4850 and a p2 955 @ 3.6

Is the driver version right?

If so, update. There's been a few GTA improvements in the change log. Although I can't remember which ones though. Drivers, since GTAs release, have helped gain upto 10FPS for some people.

The best "fix" I found was to run a processor knocking out 4ghz+ per core. All new graphics cards and tweaks ect didn't make the slightest difference in comparison.

Well the performance is fine normally, it's just this mod knocks about 35fps off and I want to try and make it just the AA component without all the modified reflections and lighting effects too.

I also got it for £5 which I'm actually really plased about. Loving how much more realistic it is over gta3 etc etc.

But I also feel that the game seems to stutter now and then while playing. I'm on a 5870 with a i7920 at 4Ghz and 6bg of ram, so it should cope with it perfectly well indeed.

I rage uninstalled GTA4 a while back due to losing my saves and now am reinstalling it again - STEAM version - after seeing those AA screens and GFX mod!

15GB to go @ 2.1MB/sec!

Well all done and patched, just woke up at 6 and it was 99% complete :p

Going to figure out where to put commandline.txt in the STEAM version now...
