Best CPU for £120 new build.

I have 4GB DDR2
I'd use the DDR2 you already have and spend £120 on the following motherboard and CPU . .

Asus M4A785D-M Pro
MB-357-AS_400.jpg

AMD Athlon II X3 425
CP-248-AM_400.jpg

I personally guarantee that combo cannot fail to impress, stacked to the gills with technology, it's a steal!

I can afford £120 on the CPU on its own.
Is the AMD Athlon II X3 425 really the best for the £120?

Wouldn't one of the below be better?

Intel Core i3 540 3.06GHz (Clarkdale) (Socket LGA1156) - Retail [BX80616I3540]

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 4MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB)

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3)

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.80GHz (Socket AM3) only £100

Intel Core i5 750 2.66Ghz (Lynnfield) (Socket LGA1156) - OEM £145

Sell the DDR2 and get some DDR3 you will lose very little doing this.

Don't base a whole rig around a couple of sticks of old ram :p

120 on the Cpu...

Get an i3 @ £98 clock it to 4ghz

The 20 quid saved goes towards new mobo

Overclockers are already selling a pre clocked i3 530 combo at 4ghz

Sorted :D

EDIT: If you can stretch then get the i5 750

I think you don't need to spend that much on a processor anymore, transfer the extra money saved into a better graphics card or something else that is gonna impact Real-World performance! :)

Rib, we have no idea what you use your computer for, if your like a typical OcUK forum member then there is a good chance you are a primary gamer so the AII X3 425 gives you sterling performance for not a lot of sterling spent! :p

DDR3 is emerging still, it's slowly getting better and cheaper, DDR2 is holding it's value well so if you keep hold of it you may well make a profit on your older investment . . . . of course the DDR2 is not gonna hold you back in anything you do!

Feel free to spend more if it makes you feel good but as a power-user myself of 15 years I am extremely impressed with the AMD Athlon II Triple Cores combined with an AMD 785G motherboard!

Thats not what he his asking.

The op asked Best CPU for £120?

Answer him instead of punting AMD in his face causing confusion.

Actually no AM3 chip needs DDR3

RibTickler, be careful who you are talking advice from, they may not really understand what they are talking about . . . .

I'm sitting here typing this using an Athlon II X3 learning how to overclock it, it's such a nice chip really! :)

Wayne this is a genuine question.

I can't find an AM3 DDR2 mobo on overclockers?

Can you link to a DDR 2 mobo that would support a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) please?

Cheers buddy

My mate has two systems with DDR2 and he would like to upgrade one of them. He maybe interested in getting a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3) if he can keep his ram.

Would DDR2 6400 not bottleneck a AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz (Socket AM3)?

Thanks
