Ebook Reader Question

There was a recent firmware upgrade that allows you to transfer pdfs over usb and read them on your kindle 2. You can also email them to your kindle account and receive an email response with an amazon conversion which you can then transfer.
That doesn't mean it's the best for your requirements though - I'm sure there must be cheaper readers without the 3G network, etc. which would do you nicely.

It's a real shame there is yet to be a decent ebook reader product out there in the UK, the sony comes close but seems to be ruined by the fact that sony still don't seem to have competent software engineers. How many sony products have been ruined by rubbish software or a insistence on using some proprietary something or other?
If you get the 6" version of the BeBook, there is an open-source firmware available for it. It includes a djvu viewer which is supposedly quite good. PDFs can be converted to djvu format.

What I don't get is why the Kindle is getting so popular over here. I remember seeing it a couple of years ago online and thinking wow that looks good yet that was two to three years ago and it's been supassed even by its own makers (the "uk" version at least). It also uses proprietary formats and is difficult to put stuff on.
It's getting worrying as I can see it becoming the next iPod, a product sold more because it is well know that good and forcing users to use their own proprietary software so difficult to actually use freely.
You having good results with PDFs with the sony and Calibre ? looking at the sony myself but must have good conversion for my PDFs.

No problem at all, you just set Calibre to import default and export to Sony Touch/300 depending on which one you have, It then converts the PDF or anything else for that matter to EPUB. You can set what you want in the preferences. Really straight forward. All the ones I have done PDF/Lit have come out just fine. The sony dispalys PDF's ok anyway, I havent had any hassle so far, but its easier to use calibre to convert to LTR or EPUB.
It is any good for large, colour, graphically intensive PDF files? My touch is just far too slow (not to mention far too small) to do them well so am looking at the iPad and thinking it may actually have a use...
