Kudos to VAG Sat Nav Retrofitters: http://www.oemretrofits.co.uk/

 Since when do recommendation threads look like boasting threads? If people want to see the Sat Nav and know more about it, I can of course post details on it - but it's far from unique.

Fair play with the sex pest, you are extremely annoying however. Do you not wonder why you get so many people digging at you?

he may be annoying, but most of the time he's annoyingly right ;)

no, i considered the tv- but i haven't gone ahead because of the hassle and it'd be a gimmick anyway

What do you actually have to remove to install the tv side of things? as if it is only rear seats that's pretty easy.

From what I can tell a VAG navigation retrofit is pretty easy, why didnt you just do it yourself and save a fortune?

I did mine myself as it is as simple as changing a radio although if you want your dash to display Navigation stuff you have to recode using VAG-COM. If you know someone who has one then all good but if not then it's not really worth buying unless you know you're going to use it again.

Are you a sex pest as well as a forum pest?

Easy there. You obviously don't agree with Fox which is up to you but there's no need to be silly about it.

I replaced my standard stereo with an RNS-510 (Sat-Nav, HD, etc) unit in my Octy vRS.
It was a matter of removing one piece of trim, 4 screws and then the wiring loom and that was it.
New unit in and off you go.
The only issue is that to code the new system in you need access to VCDS.

Over on the Briskoda forums you're never more than about 15 miles away from somebody with VCDS who is more than willing to help.

I'm not completely up on prices but they seem good value to me. Sure you are paying about £100 labour to fit it but I'm pretty sure you would struggle to find new units delivered for the total fitted price.

What's involved in becoming 'that guy never more than about 15 miles away'? Once you have the software, can you just plug into the car via a USB link?

You buy VCDS from Ross Tech.
What you get is access to the software and a USB dongle.
So with the aid of a laptop you plug yourself into the car and you can make various changes.

Popular ones for the Octy for example are enabling the second fog light, setting doors so they automatically lock once you reach 10mph, coding for cruise control retro-fit and of course coding in your new stereo/Sat Nav etc.

VCDS isn't cheap - the "cheap cables" you see advertised on Ebay either don't work or only work with pre CAN-Bus VAG vehicles.
Get the full VCDS and you should be able to interface with any VAG vehicle.
Because it isn't cheap, those that have bought it tend to be more than happy to "share" - on the two occasions I've needed access to VCDS I've managed to find somebody who was willing to help that weekend.
