What's up with that? I'm a 20 year old student and "own" a flat (mortgage but I don't see what age has to do with anything...).
Similar thing happened in our bathroom but it's the wall that's crumbling away. The wood behind the tiles is damp and is slowly desintegrating! Unfortunately, I'm in America and can't contact the insurers until I'm back in the UK to get it fixed! Annoyingly it looks like shoddy workmanship from when the flat was built and it's also affecting the flat below.

Ceiling Cat just told me to tell you that's an old photo, he's put on 5 stone since then...
It was just a question. It's pretty unlikely that a student in what I'm presuming is third or fourth year at Uni has the time to work and earn a decent enough wage to support the mortgage of a flat. However, I didn't consider the parents option.
Ive done building work for a few years now and after examining the photo once again and reading other opinions ive come to the conclusion that there is a cat in your ceiling. Its not going to be a cheap repair im affraid, going to need re plaster boarding and skimming, not to mention the cat problem.

I'm actually relocating to the living room to sleep now as I don't trust the rest of the ceiling and my cat, who is always locked out of my bedroom, has come and slept with me. Smug bugger!

That's what my old house now looks like. There's also funny mushrooms growing under the wallpaper, and mold, everywhere. Then again, it is abandoned and the owner wants to knock it down.
