Ceiling just fell on my head...

Looking at the pictures it looks like there is a botch job in the past, i.e. the old lath and plaster (or just the old laths) has been covered over with with plaster board. It all has to come down now, including the old laths. Then new plaster board and skimming. Shop around, get quotes. Don't neccessarily go for the cheapest. A good plasterer will make it like it new.

opened a can of worms by exposing the lath, it will more than likely contain horse hair which will cost a lot to remove and dispose of (you should get it removed and disposed of professionaly- not just board straight over it) then a plasterer will be able to start a fresh!

We had exactly the same thing, however I got the joy of smashing the buggery out of it to bring everything down (only a small amount actually fell through)

Thankfully we got mates rates and we did all of the boarding up ourselves. Its still a pretty expensive job however, should be pretty glad that the house isn't in your name really!

Why?

I'd suggest to the OP that he and his parents remove the lath and stick the plasterboards up (just a case of nailing them into the beams essentially, then get a plasterer to skim over it, probably only take him a couple of hours to do depending on the room.

Ive done building work for a few years now and after examining the photo once again and reading other opinions ive come to the conclusion that there is a cat in your ceiling. Its not going to be a cheap repair im affraid, going to need re plaster boarding and skimming, not to mention the cat problem.

real lol :)
